English 9002A ~ Bibliography and Textual Studies

Professor James Purkis

Fall Half Course

This compulsory fall-term pass-fail course for graduate students has three main goals:

  1. to assist graduate students in their funding applications;
  2. to teach students how to organize primary and secondary research material and to make use of the resources in Weldon Libraries;
  3. to introduce students to issues in textual studies and editorial theory from the Middle Ages to the present

The first weeks of the course will feature a series of guest lectures focused on issues of professionalization and the resources available to graduate students at Western. The Bibliography and Textual Studies section will contain lectures by the instructor and members of the Department on issues of textual theory and editorial practice. The priority throughout this second part of the course will be on relating issues of text and textual transmission to critical interpretation and graduate research.
