Mediating Hamlet

Instructor: Professor MJ Kidnie.
Summer 2023, Full Year equivalent.

This full course has three primary learning objectives. Hamlet survives in three quite distinct early textual versions. This course will introduce students to issues of textual indeterminacy and the function of editors as mediating textual agents. Its second objective will be to engage students with the mediating legacy of critical opinion as it shapes literary and theatrical reception of this most canonical of plays. The course’s third objective, which targets the play’s media transfer to stage and film, will be pursued in conversation with interpretive discussion of the text(s) and its/their critical afterlives.
