Missing Pre-Requisite

To request special permission to register in a course for which you do not have the required prerequisite(s):

  • Contact the  Departmental Advisor in the department that offers the course.
    • For example, to request special permission to take a Biology course, contact the Department of Biology. Provide them with your name, student number, the course you want to register in and the reason why you can't register in it.
    • For courses offered by departments in other faculties, contact the appropriate advising office to discuss your situation.

  • If the department agrees with the special permission, they will send their approval through our Academic Advising Help Portal and the special permission will be added to your record.

  • Once the special permission has been posted on your Student Center, trying enrolling in the course yourself.  If you are unable to, you will need to contact Western's Live Chat to speak with somone who will help you enroll in the course(s); they can do this for you for as long as web registration is open.

Special Permissions are not guaranteed – they are reviewed case by case.

Students ON PROBATION or on a Dean's Waiver, cannot take courses without prerequisites, even if the department gives special permission. This is a condition of your probation/waiver. YOU MUST TAKE COURSES YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO TAKE - it's that simple.
