Class and Exam Conflicts

Academic consideration requests can be made for class and exam conflicts. See specific scenarios below.

Please note, if you write your accommodated exams through Student Accessibility Services (students with disabilities) you will also need to contact accessible education to set up your makeup exam. Please check your course outline to determine how and when your instructor wants you to contact them. It is important you contact them separately from this Academic Absence approval process – and as soon as you can.

Class Conflicts

If you have a class conflict with an exam/test you will need Academic Consideration to move the exam/test. Please complete and submit (through our  Help Portal ) an Academic Consideration Form with complete details on when all conflicts are. Please provide supporting documentation – course outline, email from the instructor to confirm the dates are accurate in the form you filled out.

The exception to this is when your class/lab conflicts with your special exam. In these cases, the special exam takes priority and you will be approved to miss the conflicting lab/tutorial/class (see Academic Calendar ).

Midterm Exam Conflicts

If you have two exams at the same time please complete an Academic Consideration Form  and attach send it through our help portal . You will need to list both exams, including the day and times, and then check which exam you plan on moving. If only one exam has a make-up you will need to move that one. Please find out from your instructor when your make-up exams are scheduled. If no exam has a make-up you can decide.

Each midterm must be worth 15% or more to be considered.

In-class midterms take precedence over other midterm conflicts. Do not select to move an in-class midterm. Regularly scheduled classes, labs, tutorials take precedence over midterms. Do not guess which one you should move - speak with our team. Submit conflicts at least one week in advance.

Midterm: 3 in 23 hours

The Faculty of Science will extend the University Exam Conflict Policy of 3 exams in 23 hours to midterm exams at our own discretion. Each case is reviewed separately and students must show how much the course component is worth when completing the paperwork. Course outlines may be required. If approved, we will allow you to move one of your midterm exams if you have three falling within 23 hours. Please connect with our office and complete the Academic Consideration Form .

Final Exams

You will be notified by the registrar’s office if you are in a direct conflict, or have a multiple exam situation for your final exams. If you do, you can complete the necessary paperwork in Academic Advising to move an exam. This would create a special exam which would usually be written in January (for December exams) or May (for April exams).
