Locus Amoenus: The Garden of Verdant Delights | Western University Tropical Gardens

The students of AH 3696: Nature in Early Modern Art are proud to present Locus Amoenus: The Garden of Verdant Delights (April 12 – 26, 2023 in Tropical Gardens).

Inspired by Western University’s botanical gardens as a site of pedagogy and pleasure, our exhibition explores early modern green spaces and their representations in connection to contemporary places and practices. The garden as locus amoenus (pleasant place) is reframed and reimagined by the contributors, who critically engage with the definition and ideas that surround it. The seven works in the exhibition examine pertinent issues, such as plant migration, sustainability and environmental considerations, ecofeminism, cultural exchanges, the legacy of plant specimen illustrations, and gardens as representations of Eden.

Join us on April 12, 2023 (1- 4 PM) to celebrate the re-opening of the Botanical Gardens and the opening of the exhibition in Western’s Tropical Greenhouse!
