Mental Health Support has several counsellors with expertise in the provision of services to 2SLGBTQIA+ ** students. We have experience in assisting students with coming out issues, family matters, isolation, dealing with queerphobia on campus, and many other concerns.

Western University Resources

  • Human Rights Office: the Human Rights Office provides information on the University’s discrimination and harassment policies, employment equity and diversity and other human rights-related issues. We are here to help you, whether you are a student, staff or a faculty member.   • Pride Library: The Mandate of the Pride Library is to acquire, preserve, organize, and give the public access to information and materials by and about lesbians, gay, bisexual, trans and queer communities (LGBTQ).   • Sexuality and Gender Research Group: The Sexuality and Gender Research Group brings together researchers from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities with scholars in other disciplines from around the University to discuss questions of sexuality and gender from a variety of disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and cross-disciplinary perspectives. Every year, the Sexuality and Gender Research Group, in conjunction with the Western Queer Caucus, hosts a number of academic talks and organizes Queer Research Day, a full-day event involving both papers and poster and presentations. Queer Research Day is normally held on the third Wednesday in April. Membership in the Sexuality and Gender Research Group is open to faculty and graduate students.   • Trans Care Team: Recognizing the unique needs of gender-diverse students, the Trans Care Team comprises a group of clinicians and mental health counsellors from Health & Wellness Services who work together to provide specialized psychological counselling and medical care to students in an 2SLGBTQIA+ affirmative environment. Physicians at Health & Wellness Services have received training from Rainbow Health Ontario in the realm of counselling, hormone prescribing/maintenance, injections, surgical referrals, and post-operative care. We are able to refer to endocrine specialists and/or psychiatrists if there are complex needs beyond the scope of our primary care providers. Clinicians on the mental health team offer both individual counselling as well as the Queer Connections group that runs each semester.
  • Western Queer Caucus: The Queer Caucus was founded in 2007 as a group for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, two-spirited, questioning, and queer faculty and graduate students and their allies, as well as for people engaged in various forms of queer academic work. The caucus links people across faculties, schools, and departments and is intended to help forge community, facilitate academic alliances, promote scholarship, provide a venue for activism, and encourage discussions and practices of diverse forms of queer pedagogy.   • Gender, Sexuality & Women’s Studies (GSWS): An academic department located in both the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the Faculty of Social Sciences, GSWS offers courses on gender and sexuality and administers the intrafaculty Sexuality Studies major. Through GSWS, you can major in Women’s Studies and/or in Sexuality Studies or you can take a minor in either Women’s Studies or Gender, Sexuality, Culture. Current Course offerings include courses like “Contemporary Queer Topics,” “Sexual Subjects,” “Beyond the Binary: Homosexualities/Transsexualities,” “Intersections: Race, Class and Sexuality” and “Desiring Women.” WSFR is committed to providing a learning environment that celebrates diversity.   • The Peer Support Centre is a safe space on campus that provides non-judgemental, non-professional, confidential support from trained peers. Through fostering openness and understanding, the centre can provide a listening ear, resources of all kinds, or any wellness needs.  The Peer Support Centre values an inclusive and accessible environment for all students to prioritize their wellbeing.   • PrideUSC is a USC-funded advocacy group and support service at Western University, leading with an anti-racist, decolonial lens for 2SLGBTQIA+ liberation. We are fully student-run and committed to fighting for the rights of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community both at Western and in the surrounding London area. We are dedicated to amplifying voices, providing support and resources, and fostering a community that is safe and inclusive for all diverse student populations.     • PFLAG: PFLAG Canada is a national charitable organization, founded by parents who wished to help themselves and their family members understand and accept their non- heterosexual children.
