Fallona Family Interdisciplinary Showcase

The third annual Fallona Family Interdisciplinary Research Showcase was a great success. Thank you to all who took the time to participate. A filled-to-capacity audience in room 100 of the Physics and Astronomy building enjoyed an outstanding keynote presentation by the 2017 Fallona Family Interdisciplinary Research Award recipient, Dr Elizabeth Gillies, about the triggered degradation of plastics and how this process can be applied in agriculture and tailored medical treatments.

Giovanni Fanchini, T.K. Sham and Paul Ragogna each shared brief presentations about their collaborative research focused on different areas within the material sciences.

The community was also treated to a lively discussion in the Atrium during the Showcase poster session. Almost 100 posters highlighted interdisciplinary research from areas as diverse as nuclear waste container corrosion, high-performance computing in astronomical data analysis and organelle genome transcription. There was so much to learn and our poster presenters were clearly eager to share their research insights. Congratulations to our poster session award recipients, Freda Qi and Andre Galvao Duarte and Brendan Daisley.

Faculty of Science Three Minute Thesis Heat

The 3MT (Three Minute Thesis) competition is a challenging opportunity for graduate students to present their research and its impact to a panel of non-specialist judges and peers in 3 minutes or less. This academic competition is an excellent exercise by which graduate students can improve their communication skills. Also each competitor has the chance of winning the first place prize of a $1,000 and representing Western University at the national competition.

Industry Problem Solving Week

The Faculty of Science at Western University (Western Science) is hosting the fifth annual Industry Problem Solving Week (IPSW) February 21^st through 24^th, 2017. The IPSW event brings together approximately 75 undergraduate and graduate students from various faculties and schools at Western in order to develop solution strategies for real-world business problems. Ten industry partners from London, Waterloo and the GTA are presenting problem statements dealing with digital transformation, financial technology, business innovation, and marketing. These problems will challenge students to apply their knowledge of science, engineering, business and the arts to the kinds of authentic problems they are likely to encounter in careers after graduation.

Western Science has been convening annual IPSW events since 2013. The event helps students develop a portfolio of professional skills that allow them to succeed in their postgraduate careers. By working in multidisciplinary groups, students learn teamwork and collaboration skills. Real business problems are rarely as straightforward as the exercises students typically encounter in classrooms, so IPSW teaches students how to step beyond the confines of their subject matter expertise and deal with ambiguities and complexities in their problem-solving. The students finish the week by preparing a written report and presenting their solution strategy in a live pitch competition. This aspect of IPSW helps students develop the kind of general communication skills that are expected in the workplace. Overall, the IPSW event represents the type of high impact experiential learning that Western Science promotes so that graduates leave school prepared to contribute to the local and national economy.
