Western Award for Extraordinary Service and Leadership to the Research Community

The Western Award for Extraordinary Service and Leadership to the Research Community recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions towards strengthening and advancing the research enterprise at Western through sustained leadership, stewardship, advocacy, collaboration, and/or service that extends beyond the normal expectations of the individual’s role. The award may recognize:

  1. A singular outstanding contribution or period of leadership;
  2. Sustained exceptional service over time; or
  3. Extraordinary leadership during periods of institutional challenge, transition, or opportunity.

One (1) recognition is available each year. The recognition is not required to be conferred each year and will only be presented when a nominee is deemed to have made contributions of exceptional merit. Recipients of the Western Award for Extraordinary Service and Leadership to the Research Community will be recognized at the annual Western Research Awards Celebration.
 

Eligibility

Nominees may include Western faculty members, staff members, research leaders or administrators; or other members of the research community whose contributions have had a significant positive impact on research at Western.
 

Nomination Process

Nominations will be open on a rolling basis, and nominations may be submitted at any time by any member(s) of the Western research community. Self-nominations will not be accepted.

The nomination package should include:

  • The nomination form; and 
  • A nomination letter describing the nominee’s exceptional contributions and impact (maximum 3 pages), specifically addressing the evaluation criteria

 

Adjudication

A selection committee, chaired by the Vice President (Research) or designate, will choose the recipient of the Western Award for Extraordinary Service and Leadership to the Research Community.
 

Evaluation Criteria

Nominees will be evaluated based on demonstrated excellence in one or more of the following areas:

  • Leadership in support of the research enterprise;
  • Exceptional service to the research community;
  • Advancement of research culture, collaboration, or institutional capacity;
  • Stewardship of responsible, ethical, and inclusive research practices;
  • Contributions to the research community during periods of institutional challenge or change; and/or
  • Lasting institutional or research community impact.
