Animal Ethics and Care

The Animal Ethics & Care Program at Western and its affiliates is overseen by Western’s Animal Care Committee (ACC) - established in compliance with the Ontario Animals for Research Act (1990 R.S.O. c. A.22, s. 17 (2), the Canadian Council on Animal Care's (CCAC) Terms of Reference for Animal Care Committees and the Agreement on Administration of Agency Grants and Awards by Research Institutions (Sect. 4.4).

Western Research helps facilitate the work of the ACC at Western and its affiliates, providing support in every aspect of its important role in research at Western.

The use of animals in animal-based science activities at Western and affiliates is a privilege granted only to those who have received Animal Use Protocol approval from Western's ACC and whose activities align with best practices with respect to animal welfare standards as set out by our external regulators.

Animal Acknowledgement

We acknowledge that animals are sentient beings and that we are privileged to use them in our research and teaching. We accept our mandate to foster the highest standards for the ethical use of animals in science. We recognize that this can be achieved by the rigorous application of the 3-Rs and by weighing the harms and benefits of the animal research protocols we are charged to review.
