NSERC Brockhouse Canada Prize
This pre-call framework is based on previous competitions, and is therefore subject to change as new information is provided by NSERC.
The Brockhouse Canada Prize for Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Engineering recognizes outstanding Canadian teams of researchers from different disciplines who have combined their expertise to produce achievements of outstanding international significance in the natural sciences and engineering. The prize is accompanied by a team research grant of up to $250,000.
Eligibility
Candidates may be nominated by any individual or group; however, self-nominations will not be accepted.
Nominees:
- Teams must have at least two independent researchers, at least one holding an NSERC grant.
- The majority of the nominated team members must be employed at a Canadian university or public or private organization.
- Contributions must be primarily in the natural sciences and engineering, and of an interdisciplinary and collaborative nature.
Nomination Process
A nomination consists of:
- Nomination Letter (max 4 pages) Including a title describing the research achievement(s), using these headings
- Team's achievements built on:
- Research contributions
- Training and mentoring contributions
- The interdisciplinary and collaborative nature of the team and its achievements
- If the interdisciplinary nature of a team is not evident, the nomination may be ruled ineligible.
- Team's achievements built on:
- Description (max one page) of the team's five most important joint contributions, with relevant bibliographic information;
- The names and contact details of six researchers who NSERC may contact for an impartial review of the nomination. The researchers should come from a wide range of experience, career stages, under-represented groups, etc.;
- Letter from the team identifying one member as the group spokesperson, who must be eligible to hold an NSERC grant. The letter must also include the name, title, affiliation, and email address of each team member;
- Identification of any eligible leaves of absence (optional, maximum one page if written in English and 1.5 pages if written in French), in line with the section on interruptions in research, training and mentoring.
- Terms and conditions form for nominees signed by each nominee;
- Terms and conditions form for nominators signed by each nominator.
The Government of Canada has published its Policy on Sensitive Technology Research and Affiliations of Concern. This funding opportunity is in scope of this new policy. Grant applications that involve conducting research that aims to advance a sensitive technology research area will not be funded if any of the researchers involved in activities supported by the grant are currently affiliated with, or in receipt of funding or in-kind support from, a named research organization. If the prize will support research activities that aim to advance a listed sensitive technology research area, prize recipients will be required to comply with the policy and submit attestation forms to NSERC. Please read the Tri-agency Guidance on the STRAC Policy to understand how this policy may impact your grant.
