Human Research Ethics

The Office of Human Research Ethics (OHRE), on behalf of Western's Research Ethics Boards (REB), manages the approval and monitoring process for the use of humans in research at the University and its affiliated hospitals and research institutes. All research involving humans conducted by faculty, staff or students at Western or its affiliated hospitals or research institutes must be approved by a Western-sanctioned review board.

*NOTE: due to the fact the Office of Human Research Ethics (OHRE) and the REBs are prioritizing amendments to ongoing research projects, and expediting review of new projects related specifically to COVID-19, there may be a delay in the review and approval of other recently submitted applications beyond our documented review timelines.  Should this cause concern, please correspond with the appropriate Ethics Officer via WREM correspondence.

**For up to-date information regarding research during COVID-19 please see our Communication page**

Ethics applications are reviewed by one of two research ethics boards (NMREB or HSREB) at an appropriate level (Delegated or Full Board), based on the nature of the proposed research.
