Secured Bike Areas

Bike Room

bike shelterWestern University now offers two secure bicycle parking areas available at no cost to Western Faculty, Staff, and Students.

These spaces are convenient, secure, weather-protected spaces and  feature solid steel lock bars for maximum security. The secured bike areas will accommodate most standard-sized bicycles.

Please note: due to safety considerations, electric bikes are permitted in the bike shelters (and lockers) if their battery is UL Certified. Spot checks for compliance are done by Western Fire Safety. If you have any questions about checking your bike for UL Certification, reach out to Parking staff at wparking@uwo.ca.

Secured Bike Space Locations:

Alumni Thompson Parking Lot:  Features vertical racking which can accommodate up to 60 bicycles.

Thames Hall Room 1105: This bike room offers capacity for 26 bicycles with a mixture of vertical racking and floor posts for larger cargo bicycles. Directions to the bike room: enter the building from exterior door "EX13" near the loading dock by the Fowler Kennedy doors on the east side of Thames Hall.

Access to these secured spaces is granted through your Western ONECard. Only those with an active, Bike Shelter Permit will have access to the space. Bike Shelter Permits are virtual; no hang tag is required.  Space in the secured bike locations is offered to permit holders on a first-come, first served basis.

How to get your free Bike Shelter/Room Permit

If you are interested in obtaining a permit to access one of these spaces, log into your Western Parking Account and select either “ATBIKE” for the Alumni Thompson Shelter or "THBIKE" for the Thames Hall Bike Room, from your list of permits available for purchase. You may have only ONE bike shelter permit at at time. There is no charge for these, but you will have to proceed to Check Out as though purchasing in order to have the permit secured for your use. These permits run from September 1st through to August 31st each year and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Once you have "purchased" your free Bike Shelter Permit online, activation of your Western ONECard for access to the bike shelters may take up to 3 business days (after September 1).

How to renew your Bike Shelter Permit

Bike Shelter Permits expire at 11:59 p.m. on August 31st. Bike Shelter permits for the next academic year will be available for purchase online through the Parking Portal as of August 1st each year. Permit holders who wish to renew their bike shelter permit may do so online through the Parking Portal. Space is limited, so failure to renew may result in the inability to purchase a permit and loss of access to the bike shelter.

Bike Lockers

Located throughout campus, these spacious lockers will provide safety and protection for your bicycle and bike gear. Most standard size bikes will fit, although some tandem bikes or recumbent bikes may not fit into the lockers. There is a charge for the use of the bike lockers.
