Research Contracts & Partnership Agreements

Western Research manages all contractual research agreements for the university's research community by drafting, negotiating and administering research contracts and agreements with our partners for the successful and beneficial outcomes of all parties.

We support researchers by:

  • Meeting with researchers and partners to establish goals and mutual beneficial outcomes during the research planning phase;
  • Establishing the appropriate type of agreement for your research partnership;
  • Advising in budget development; and
  • Setting up and routing internal approvals through the Research On Line Application system.

Types of Agreements and Contracts Supported

  • Clinical study and trial agreements;
  • Government, foundation, and not-for-profit organization contracts;
  • Indigenous community and data sovereignty agreements.
  • Industry contract research and services agreements;
  • Inter-institutional agreements;
  • Material transfer agreements;
  • Non-disclosure and confidentiality agreements; and
  • Sub-grants and sub-contracts.

Western Research provides additional assistance related to ethics, animal care, Indigenous research, research security, conflict of interest and by connecting researchers to the relevant departments to obtain certifications and ensure program compliance.

Subgrants & Research Transfer of Funds

Receiving a Subgrant

The Research Contracts & Partnership Agreements team will assist with the review and administration of subgrants issued by the institution holding the main grant agreement.

Providing a Subgrant or Transfer of Funds

When issuing a subgrant, the subgrant agreement will be based on the requirements of the sponsor or agency program. Tri-Agency subgrants will follow the requirements of eligible institutions and program guidelines.

Subgrants based on Western internal grants will be issued on a cost-reimbursement basis with a detailed budget and research description.
