About Us

Western's researchers are supported by various offices within the Research Western portfolio, in collaboration with other units across the University. These partners work together to provide the best possible service to the University's research community. Please see below for details about units supporting Western's research enterprise.

Research Development & Services (RD&S)

The primary role of RD&S is to assist faculty members and University administrators in gaining a competitive edge when it comes to external, internal and international funding proposals. RD&S also plays an important role in identifying funding opportunities that are consistent with the University's research strengths and emerging priority areas.

Human Research Ethics

Human Research Ethics is responsible for the administration of the approval process for the use of human subjects in research at Western. All research involving human participants conducted by faculty, staff or students at Western or its affiliated hospitals and research institutes must be approved by one of the two research ethics boards established at Western. Animal Care Committee

All research and teaching using vertebrate animals must have been reviewed and approved by the Animal Care Committee (ACC), the working subcommittee of the Western University Council for Animal Care (UCAC). This review and approval process ensures federal (Canadian Council on Animal Care), provincial (Ontario Animals in Research Act) and other national  (CALAM ‘Standards of Care) standards for the ethical use of animals in science are in place. No work with animals can be initiated, or animals obtained, prior to approval by the ACC.

Procurement Services

It is very important at both the grant application and post approval stages that complete and competitive quotations be obtained for goods and services required. This is to ensure the costing is accurate and the best value for money is realized. The Purchasing Department works with the researcher and supplier community to satisfy these requirements in accordance with proper process while minimizing the administrative effort for the researcher. The researcher always controls the specifications and ultimately makes the final decision, but Procurement Services provide assistance to get there.
