Graduate Student Conference Travel Award Instructions

The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) Graduate Student Conference Travel Award Program helps to offset the costs for a graduate student presenting their research at an academic conference. Please read through the information below before submitting an application.

For the 2023-2024 academic year, FHS has increased the number of awards and the values available to students enroled in a FHS graduate program. A total of $45,000 will be available for award each academic year.

Eligibility for Travel Award

To be eligible for the FHS Graduate Student Conference Travel Award, students must:

  • Be a full-time student enrolled in a FHS Graduate Program at the time of the application and during the time of travel and/or conference attendance and at the time the funding is awarded. This includes students in the Health and Information Sciences (HIS) program.
  • Present at a conference that is relevant to your academic area and that has a peer review acceptance process for the abstract submissions and/or attend a conference to receive an award (e.g., award for best student paper in a peer-reviewed journal).
  • Provide proof of acceptance for your presentation or your award.

Please note:

  • A student may receive funding once per academic year, September through August.
  • A limited number of awards are available each year and meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee receipt of funding.

One award per student per academic year.

All Other Travel Locations up to $1,000

Application Dates/Deadlines

The Faculty of Health Sciences Graduate Conference Travel Award program helps to offset the costs of participating in an academic conference. There are two competitions annually. Application packages must be submitted within the academic term of the conference and by the indicated deadline (see below).

For travel commencing between:

August 1 to December 31

Applications must be submitted by December 15.

 January 1 to July 31

Applications must be submitted by July 15.

Submitting an Application

STEP 1: Confirm first with your FHS graduate supervisor, if any expenses can be covered through a research grant.

STEP 2: Complete the online application:

  • Apply only for the eligible expense(s) which cannot be covered by another source (e.g., grant funds, program travel award, SOGS award)

STEP 3: Obtain your supervisor's signature on the Survey Response Confirmation

  • Email sent to your Western (@uwo.ca) email address

STEP 4: Submit the following documents to your Graduate Program Office by the application deadline:

  • Survey Response Confirmation Email signed by your supervisor.
  • Submitted presentation abstract.
  • Email confirming acceptance of the presentation or notification of the award.
  • Proof of payment for conference registration fee.
  • Other receipts up to the maximum of the award value.

PLEASE ASSURE THE FOLLOWING ARE PART OF YOUR APPLICATION:

  • Confirmation of acceptance of presentation, abstract or notification of your award.
  • Supervisor Confirmation/Signature for approval.
  • Only send receipts up to total possible award value.
