The Department of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences at The University of Western Ontario has evolved from its origins in 1922, when Professor Harold Kingston introduced courses tailored to London’s financial sector, into a distinguished program known for its academic and professional excellence. Initially housed within the Department of Mathematics, actuarial science gained prominence with the establishment of the Richter Memorial Professorship in the 1960s and became part of an independent department in the 1980s under Ian MacNeill. Despite some challenges in the 1990s, the department maintained its offerings through innovative policies and the dedication of faculty like John Mereu, whose contributions to actuarial science were honored at the 1990 Actuarial Research Conference and later with a Society of Actuaries President’s Award. Under the leadership of dedicated faculty members, the department modernized its curriculum to align with professional standards, preparing students for actuarial exams and accreditation. The department now stands as a leader in actuarial and statistical sciences, with a strong faculty that includes Fellows of the Society of Actuaries and researchers advancing education and practice through cutting-edge research and comprehensive programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
