Graduate Scholarships and Awards

Canada Graduate Research Scholarship -- Doctoral  

  • Amount:  $40,000 per year for 36 months  

  • Deadline:  Mid-September

  • Eligibility:  the CGRS-D is open to all students including Canadian citizens, permanent residents, Protected Person under subsection 95(2) of the  Immigration and Refugee Protection Act  (Canada), and international students. Canadian citizens and permanent residents may apply before they are accepted into a PhD program. International students must be enrolled in a PhD program at the time of application. Candidates must have completed no more than 36 months of their program by December 31 or the year that they apply.  For full details about eligibility, review the ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA  on the NSERC website.

Canada Graduate Research Scholarship – Master’s  

  • Amount:  $27,000 per year for 12 months  

  • Deadline:  December  1

  • Eligibility:  the CGRS-M is open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and Protected Persons under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada). Candidates must be enrolled in or applying for an eligible master’s or doctoral level program and have completed no more than 12 months of the program as of December 31 or the year of application. Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS) and QEII Graduate Scholarships in Science and Technology (QEII-GSST)

  • Amount: one-year $15,000 award (over three consecutive terms), that starts September, May, or January.

  • Deadline: January 

  • Eligibility: open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and  Protected Persons under subsection 95 (2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protections Act (Canada), and international students. Candidates must be current graduate students in or have submitted a graduate admission application to a research-based graduate program well in advance of the OGS application deadline.

WSIB Statistical and Actuarial Sciences Graduate Award

  • Amount: 2 at $10,000 awarded annually

  • Effective Date: May 2024 to April 2029 inclusive

  • Deadline: September 30

  • Eligibility: Awarded to graduate students in any MSc program in the Department of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences, Faculty of Science based on academic achievement and an interest in pursuing a career in actuarial sciences or advanced analytics. Preference will be given to candidates in the Actuarial Sciences MSc, although students in Financial Modelling, or Statistics MSc are also eligible. Candidates must be eligible to work in Canada (domestic students or co-op work permit holders). Recipients will have an opportunity to interview for a work term or internship with WSIB. Students are not guaranteed a work term or internship with WSIB. An offer of full-time employment with WSIB may also be extended pending successful completion of the program and work term, at WSIB’s sole discretion. A recipient is not obligated to participate in the work term or accept employment with WSIB following graduation to receive or retain the award.

  • Selection: A selection committee made up of representatives from the Faculty of Science will short list applicants for the award. Short-listed candidates will be interviewed by a representative from WSIB, a member of Science Graduate Studies and the Chair of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences or their designates. Final selection of recipients will be made by the Faculty of Science. At least one representative of the committee must hold membership in the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

  • Recognition: This award is made possible by a contribution from the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB).

  • Application: Students must complete an application form in accordance with the deadline announced annually by the Faculty of Science. A limited number of applicants will be chosen to participate in an interview.
