Western University values diversity and we strongly encourage international students to apply to our MScOT graduate program.

The Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MScOT) program at Western University prepares future occupational therapists for meaningful occupation-based practice by providing a venue of critical thinking, collaboration, a local-to-global perspective and a focus on social justice and equity. We foster an environment of respect and value where international applicants can thrive. We deliver on this commitment through equitable admission practices and review and evaluation of international applicant files that reflect these values. We endeavour to elevate applicants who have demonstrated the academic and personal attributes which will allow for successful completion of the program while prioritizing candidates who can enrich the program and profession through their life experience and may be benefited by a pathway of study in Canada. The Master of Science in Occupational Therapy program is an intense, full-time program and applicants must demonstrate through their application and academic background that they can be successful in the program.

By applying as an international applicant, you are agreeing to pay international fees for the duration of the program. Applicants must self-identify as an international student in the ORPAS application. To be considered, applicants must complete all admission requirements.

The Government of Canada recently announced a cap on new study permits. We have been assured that this cap will not affect incoming Master’s or Doctoral applicants.

If you have any immigration-related questions, Western International’s immigration advisors are happy to help. Please visit Western International’s website, make an appointment with an advisor, or contact the advising team at iesc@uwo.ca.

This does not apply to English preparatory programs. For applicants who are applying during their fourth year of undergraduate studies, four years will be counted as of June 30th of the application year.

Casper

All applicants are required to complete a Casper test. Casper is an online test that assesses for non-cognitive skills and interpersonal characteristics that we believe are important for successful students and graduates of our program and will complement the other tools that we use for applicant screening. For the 2024 application, the last Casper test date that will be accepted is on January 25, 2024. Visit Casper for all available test dates. Casper FAQ.

Applicants must use the same name and email address on the Casper as they do on their ORPAS application. Failing to enter correct and identical information may mean we are unable to match an applicant's Casper results with their ORPAS application. In this case, we will consider an application incomplete, and the application will be disqualified from further consideration.

NOTE: Applicants must add Western’s School of Occupational Therapy to their Casper distribution list for their scores to be sent directly to us from the testing organization.

We will not consider applicants with incomplete or missing Casper scores.

Co-Op Work Permit Requirement for Fieldwork

The Masters of Science in Occupational Therapy (MScOT) program requires students to complete 1,000 hours of supervised placements in diverse health care and social care settings, spanning work with children to older adults. As such, international applicants are required to have a co-op permit (in addition to a study permit) before the start of the program. Upon admission, successful applicants will receive a conditional offer letter which they can use as a required part of their co-op permit application. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that a co-op permit is obtained prior to starting the program.

Please note that once obtained, a co-op permit can only be used to complete the placements at approved and assigned institutions required by the program. International applicants planning to practice as a Registered Occupational Therapist in the province of Ontario should review the registration requirements for the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario (COTO). It is also recommended that applicants review the eligibility requirements for becoming a registered occupational therapist (where applicable) in their desired country to ensure Western’s entry-level Occupational Therapy program meets those requirements.

For more information regarding applying to a co-op permit or assistance for international applicants, please visit the IRCC website Work as a co-op student or intern and/or contact Western’s International and Exchange Student Centre at iesc@uwo.ca.

Upon Accepting an Offer

All international students should complete the International Student Orientation for Graduate Students offered through Western’s International & Exchange Student Centre as soon as they are able.
