Student Collectives

SASAH students are encouraged to spearhead their own projects and initiatives, both within the classroom and beyond. Many Arts and Humanities initiatives are supported (or have been entirely founded by) past and present SASAH community members!

ICONOCLAST Collective

icon-logo.pngICONOCLAST is Western University's arts & culture collective, created out of a desire to have interdisciplinary conversations about things that affect us all as students and people on campus. In particular, we hope to examine these experiences through an intersectional, inclusive, and expressive lens, elevating the personal experience. Although we are housed in the warm arms of the AHSC, we welcome students from every department to contribute: scientists who write poetry, musicians who paint, English majors who do performance art, engineers who take photos—we want to see all of your work. We release a bi-annual publication online and in print, and we are expanding our events to include gallery showings and workshops. We want Western students of diverse backgrounds to contribute to a community that will bring out the creative underground of our campus.

Whether you make creative content or not, our launch parties are always fun and we have other activities brewing for the semester. Highlights include print copies of our publication, live music, cool venues, good company, and free snacks!

If you want to get involved, check us out on Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Join us—whether you contribute to our next issueapply to join the team, attend our upcoming events, or propose a new idea altogether. We wouldn’t be here without your art and enthusiasm. Directors of Iconoclast

IRIS

IRIS is a digital journal created by students in SASAH (the School for Advanced Studies in the Arts and Humanities) at Western University. Our academic endeavours encourage us to challenge and reframe our views of the world beyond, as we continue to refine the ways in which we communicate with it. A cooperative environment and sense of community is natural to SASAH and it is our hope that this journal will provide a digital space for discussion and connection, where students can engage with the world and each other so we can maintain and continue to build a community within our program.

The name IRIS reflects and encapsulates the energy and intentions of this project. According to Greek mythology, Iris was the Goddess of the rainbow and the messenger of the Gods. She facilitated connection between people and was often connected to light and new endeavours. She captures the spirit of this journal perfectly, in that we are hoping to create a new space for connection as well as shed light on current matters on the basis of the personal reflective pieces showcased on the site. Additionally, it is said that the Iris flower represents wisdom, hope, and trust, all of which we hope to welcome and represent in this digital space.
