Develop Your Own Education Internship

Interested in becoming a Teaching Assistant at your former elementary or high school or at a school in your neighbourhood? If you have a favourite teacher or want to work close to home, you can create your own internship.

Eligible students may be able to count a self-developed internship for academic credit through the Arts & Humanities Internship Program (AHIP).

How to develop your own internship

1. Contact the school directly.
Reach out to a teacher or school by email (a cold email is fine) or by calling the school’s general phone number to ask about internship opportunities.

2. Confirm support from the school.
The teacher and principal must agree to host you for the internship.

3. Submit the proposal form.
If you would like to count the internship for academic credit, complete the AHIP Student-Found Internship Proposal form. Be sure to include the contact information for both the teacher and the principal. Email the completed form to ahintern@uwo.ca.

4. Receive approval and have the internship set up for credit.
If the internship meets the AHIP’s eligibility criteria, the faculty's Experiential Learning Specialist will approve it and work with the teacher and principal to formally set up the internship for academic credit. If the internship is directly related, it may also count toward a student’s module.

If you have questions or want to learn more about developing your own internship, contact ahintern@uwo.ca.
