Current Opportunities

Students registered in the Arts and Humanities Internship Program can search for and apply to internships . . .

  • On Western Connect
  • Through external job boards (Indeed, LinkedIn, etc.)
  • Through their own personal or professional networks.

Note! You must contact the Experiential Learning Specialist to confirm the eligibility of an internship you find through an external source or network.

Warning! Job Scams

Always exercise caution when receiving emails about job opportunities, as many are fraudulent. Legitimate companies always identify themselves and have legitimate business email addresses and never ask for a fee to apply.

If the job opportunity seems too good to be true, it probably is. If you are unsure whether a job opportunity email you've received is legitimate, contact ahintern@uwo.ca

Education Internships

**The application period for Fall 2025 internships is now closed. Winter 2026 internship opportunities will be posted in October.

Are you passionate about teaching and eager to develop your skills and gain hands-on experience in the classroom? Do you want to see what it's like to be a teacher before committing to teachers' college? Do you want to expand your professional network and make connections that can be helpful when you are on the job market? Sign up for an Education Internship!

We have two options:

Option 1

The Arts and Humanities Internship Program (AHIP) has partnered with the Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB) and the London District Catholic School Board (LDCSB) to offer Teaching Assistant internships in London and the surrounding area.

These opportunities are open to upper-year Arts and Humanities students with a cumulative average of 70%+ and no failures or academic offences.

Students will work 10 hours per week over 12 weeks of the term. The internships are unpaid but can be counted for academic credit (if eligible) through the AHIP. All students will be required to complete professionalization internship preparation, regardless of whether you count it for credit.

Teaching assistants will have the chance to support in areas such as:

Instructional Support

  • Assist with lesson preparation (e.g., making copies, setting up equipment)
  • Help lead small group instruction or supervise group activities
  • Provide one-on-one support to students who need extra help
  • Support classroom management
  • Facilitate discussions or guide students

Administrative Tasks

  • Take attendance or record participation
  • Update bulletin boards and organize classroom materials
  • Enter data related to student performance or class records

Professional Development

  • Observe teaching techniques and classroom management strategies
  • Reflect on lessons and discuss observations with the lead teacher
  • Prepare and present a lesson or part of one (if permitted)

Read the instructions below carefully before applying.

How to Apply

  1. Visit the Education Internships webpage

  1. Look at the Open Internship List. Here you will find a list of all the available placements (teacher, grade, location, etc.). All placements for the TVDSB are listed in a spreadsheet.

  1. Note! Placements at the London District Catholic School Board will be offered in the winter term only. If you want one of these placements, indicate this as Choice 1 on the information form (more below), and we will match you with a school in November.

  1. Download the Student Information Form and save it to your computer. On this form, you will be asked to indicate your top three placement choices from the Open Internship List.

  1. Send your resume and Student Information Form to ahintern@uwo.ca. Applications that do not contain both of these will not be considered.

Note! Internships will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, so you should apply early. Once a student has chosen a placement, we will remove it from the Open Internship List. If you choose a placement after another student has already selected it, we will assign you your second or third choice.

Option 2

Become a Teaching Assistant at your former elementary or high school.

If you have a favourite teacher or want to work at a school that's close to home, you can develop your own internship and count it for credit if you're enrolled in the AHIP.

To do so, contact the teacher or school directly. If they support your internship, email the teacher's or principal's contact information to ahintern@uwo.ca. The Experiential Learning Specialist will organize the internship.

To learn more about the process of developing your own internship, contact ahintern@uwo.ca and fill out the Student Found Internship Proposal form.

IMPORTANT!!!

You can choose to undertake an internship in the Fall term, Winter term, or both.

You must commit to 10-12 hours per week, consistently show up to your placement, and represent the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the university positively and professionally.

You are responsible for securing transportation to and from your internship location, so be sure to consider the location when applying for or developing an internship.

Visit our Meeting Our Interns page to read about past interns’ experiences as Teaching Assistants.

Western Work Study

Western’s Work Study program offers opportunities for students to work part-time on campus in jobs that accommodate their studies. The objectives of the Work Study program are to . . .

  • assist students in financial need with a regular source of income
  • offer students training and experience that will assist them in further studies and their eventual entrance into the workforce,
  • and help staff and faculty.
Financial need is determined as it is for the Canada and Ontario Student Loans. It involves assessing the costs of the program the student is registered in (based on advice from students) and the resources available to them.

Eligibility

To be eligible for Work Study, you must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident and demonstrate a genuine financial need.  If you are applying in Fall/Winter, you must be registered on Main Campus and have a minimum 60% course load (40% course load for students with disabilities).

Work Study is generally not offered to first-year students, as their financial need is met through the Admission Bursary process, and Work Study assistance would decrease the amount of Admission Bursary assistance. For special circumstances for international or graduate students, please see below.

Note! Students registered at an affiliated college are not eligible for the Main Campus Work Study program during the Fall/Winter academic term.  If you are attending an affiliate, please check with your college for information regarding available Work Study.

How to Apply

The Bursary, Work Study, and Need-Based Awards programs are based on financial need and applied for via the Financial Assistance Profile Application. The application is available for the fall and winter terms through the Student Center at the end of August.

Once logged into your Student Center, click "Student Financials" > "Financial Aid and Funding" > "Apply for Financial Assistance" > "Click here to Apply for Financial Assistance" to access the application.

Application Deadlines

The deadline to apply for work study for the Fall/Winter term is February 28.
