Applying for Internships
Once you’ve been approved for the Arts & Humanities Internship Program (AHIP), you’re ready for the next step: applying for internships.
This page outlines the process, from finding opportunities to preparing your applications and navigating the selection process. Securing an internship is a professional process that requires you to take initiative, reflect on your goals, and present your skills with confidence.
Internships in Arts & Humanities are diverse and often tailored to individual interests. Whether in cultural organizations, non-profits, schools, government, or corporations, each opportunity will have its own expectations and timelines, so careful attention to detail is essential.
Below, you’ll find step-by-step guidance. Take your time, stay organized, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions—we’re here to support you as you move from program approval to meaningful, real-world experience.
Regularly Check Western Connect and Other Sites for Internship Postings
Students can search for internships on Western Connect or external job boards (e.g., Indeed, LinkedIn, or Monster).
- Western Connect Postings
Opportunities are posted on Western Connect throughout the year. Check regularly, even in the summer months, for new postings and follow the application process outlined in each job description. You will be notified by Careers & Experience or the employer if you have been selected for an interview.
- External Postings
Students should not rely on Western Connect alone. Set a time every week to search for opportunities on the big job boards, like Indeed and Monster, and don't forget government sites, like the Government of Canada Student employment page and Job Bank and the Ontario Summer Employment Opportunities (SEO) Program.
We also strongly recommend that students create a LinkedIn profile with a photo and professional details. Follow people and organizations you're interested in and ask to connect with professionals to build your network.
The AHIP team regularly reposts internship opportunities to the Western Arts & Humanities Internship Progam group profile page. Ask to join us today!
Internships from external job boards must be approved by the Experiential Learning Specialist. Students must submit the job posting and complete the Student Found Internship Proposal for internships found through external sources.
Search for an internship on Western Connect:
- Log in to Western Connect.
- Click "Internship/Co-op" → "Intern/Co-op Jobs" in the left menu.
- Under "Quick Searches," click "For My Program" to see the postings for Arts and Humanities.
- Click a posting to see the term, length, start and end dates, job description, and application deadline.
- Click the black circle at the bottom-right corner to save, shortlist, or indicate your dis interest in the internship. This will help you to keep track of the positions that interest you.
Note: While we are happy to help, the student is ultimately responsible for finding their own internship, whether through Western Connect, an external job board, or the student’s personal/professional network.
Warning! Job Scams
Always exercise caution with emails offering job opportunities, as many are fraudulent. Legitimate companies will always identify themselves, have a legitimate business email address, and never ask for a fee to apply.
If the job opportunity seems too good to be true, it probably is. If you are unsure whether a job opportunity is legitimate, contact ahintern@uwo.ca.
Apply for Jobs and Interview
To apply for an internship posted on Western Connect:
- Follow the "Application Procedure" outlined in the internship posting. To keep track of internships you intend to apply for, click "I intend to apply for this position."
- To view the internships for which you've indicated that you intend to apply, click "Internship/Co-op" → "Intern/Co-op Applications" and look in the "Status of applications" section.
- Apply through Western Connect or the employer's website or email address by the given deadline. The procedure for each internship is different, so read the postings carefully.
Employers typically contact only those students chosen for interviews. Ongoing, accepted, and declined interviews are listed in Western Connect under "Intern/Co-op Interviews" in the left-hand menu.
To articulate your skills, experiences, and interests during interviews and become more comfortable with the interview process, we recommend that students visit Western’s Interview Preparation and Interview Warmup for practice questions, preparation tips, and more.
