Training and Funding for Commercialization
To bridge the gap between scientific discovery and real-world impact, Western Research – through the Western's technology transfer office – offers researchers training on essential commercialization skills from market analysis to business model development. In partnership with the Morrissette Institute for Entrepreneurship, we offer a variety of commercialization training programs for researchers and students:
- Commercial IQ is a new program 8 week for researchers and trainees to assess the commercial potential of idea and build a commercialization plan.
- Winter 2026 applications are open until January 17, 2026.
- Graduate Student Innovation Scholars is designed for graduate students interested in entrepreneurship, commercialization, and knowledge transfer.
- Intellectual Property Strategy Boot Camp is an intensive six-week program featuring six 90-minute virtual sessions that explore key aspects of intellectual property management and commercialization.
- WE-Empower! brings together innovative and entrepreneurial individuals who self-identify as women to provide free mentorship and training in entrepreneurship, research commercialization and Intellectual Property protection.

Funding Innovation
Advance2Market Fund
Advance to Market Fund awards are intended to support the cost of projects that will advance innovative research results towards application and commercialization. The competitions are for one-time projects based on existing research initiatives. Applicants can only receive one grant per type of project or technology.
One of the first steps in the application process is to submit a Report of Invention (ROI).
