Admission Requirements

MA Program

The MA in Philosophy at Western is a one-year funded program. Students take six one-term courses and write a 10,000 research paper over the summer (which may, but need not, develop work from one of their courses). Each year the courses available reflect the strengths and diversity of interests of the faculty, which collect along five principal fields: feminist philosophy; history of philosophy (ancient, medieval and modern); moral, political and legal philosophy; philosophy of mind and language; and philosophy of science (including mathematics and logic).

Admission requirements:

  • Honours (or four year) Bachelor's degree in Philosophy from an accredited university, although students whose specialization is not Philosophy may be admitted
  • Minimum 70% average in last two years of the undergraduate degree, as determined by the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies
  • Applicants whose first language is not English must furnish evidence of their proficiency in the use of the English language (School of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies - Admissions Requirements). Our program does not waive this requirement, however applicants may request that SGPS assess their eligibility of an exemption and we will accept their waiver

PhD Program

There are two streams in the Ph.D. program in Philosophy at Western. Students entering with an MA (as most do) are enrolled in a four-year funded program. In first year students take courses; in their second they take a comprehensive exam in their main research area and complete a course that will lead the writing and defense of a thesis prospectus; their third and fourth years are spent writing their dissertations. The courses and supervision available reflect the strengths and diversity of interests of the faculty, which collect along five principal fields: feminist philosophy; history of philosophy (ancient, medieval and modern); moral, political and legal philosophy; philosophy of mind and language; and philosophy of science (including mathematics and logic).

There is also a five-year program for students entering with only a BA. Students in this stream are funded for five years. The program is as described above, but with an extra year of coursework at the beginning.
