Adjunct Clinical Faculty Information

The School of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) at Western University is delighted to offer adjunct status to active clinical educators who supervise students in our professional audiology and speech-language pathology programs. This affiliation celebrates the invaluable expertise, mentorship, and dedication of our clinical educators, while recognizing the vital role they play in shaping the next generation of professionals. The definitions, requirements, and eligibility for adjunct status are described in detail below.

Definition and Responsibilities

All appointments as Adjunct Clinical Faculty in the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) follow the policies and procedures specified in the Western document Procedures for Causal Academic Appointments of Faculty at the University of Western Ontario.

Specifically, an appointment at the rank of “Adjunct Clinical Professor” is reserved for those who do not otherwise hold an academic appointment at the University. Individuals who are employed by the university are not eligible to apply for adjunct status.

Adjunct Clinical Professors are expected to participate in a variety of clinical education activities, including clinical practicum supervision of students.

Basic Requirements

All Adjunct Clinical Faculty candidates must meet all the following basic requirements:

• The applicant must be a General Registrant Member of the College of Audiologists and Speech Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO), or the equivalent provincial regulatory body.
• The applicant must be in good standing with their regulatory body.
• The applicant must have demonstrated competence and a clear professional commitment to clinical education through activities such as clinical supervision.

Adjunct Status Eligibility Criteria:

• A Clinical Educator who provides 20 or more full days of clinical supervision annually.
• The Clinical Educator must complete the minimum number of days in the preceding calendar year to apply for this adjunct status.
• To maintain adjunct status, the Clinical Educator must continue to provide a minimum of 20 or more full days of clinical supervision annually. If adjunct status is not maintained or renewed, the Clinical Educator is not permitted to include “Adjunct Clinical Professor” in their signature line, social media platforms, or their affiliated company websites.

Further Important Considerations

In considering and evaluating Adjunct Clinical Faculty for appointments and re-appointments, the following will be taken into consideration by the School of CSD and the Appointments Committee.

• The applicant’s history of clinical supervision.
• The applicant’s level of past involvement in the clinical program.
• Any previous student evaluations of the applicant here and elsewhere.

Procedure

Applicants for Adjunct Clinical Faculty appointments must complete and submit a written and signed application, along with a current current Curriculum Vitae/resume, to the Director of the School of CSD. Please note that further evaluative information may be requested.

Appointments

Adjunct Clinical Faculty for the School of CSD are appointed at the rank of “Adjunct Clinical Professor”. All applications are reviewed by the Director of the School of CSD, the Academic Coordinators of Clinical Education, and the School of CSD Appointments Sub-Committee.

All appointments will be made in adherence with Western University procedures. Appointments will follow the academic calendar year (July 1st to June 30th) and normally will be for a one-year term. Adjunct Clinical Faculty members may not vote in the Department meetings, cannot serve on general Departmental committees, and cannot be employed by Western University.

Renewal of Appointments

At the end of the term of appointment, Adjunct Clinical Faculty may apply for renewal of the appointment. The same criteria for considering and evaluating applicants will be applied as for initial appointments, and the same procedures will be followed.
