Amanda Holden: Western Science Alumni Award of Achievement Recipient
Amanda Holden's path to receiving the Western Science Alumni Award of Achievement highlights her dedication,
resilience, and passion for technology, creativity and community service. Born in Sarnia, Ontario, Amanda's interest in science was sparked by her father, an engineer. Despite initially leaning towards art in high school, she discovered her true passion for science. This realization led her to Western University, where she switched from an art program to study Computer Science, setting the stage for her impressive academic and professional journey.
During her time at Western, Amanda excelled in a challenging academic environment, drawn to computer science for its problem-solving nature. Graduating in the 1980s, Amanda entered a booming field with a high demand for computer science skills. She was one of the few women in her cohort, marking the beginning of a trailblazing career.
Amanda began her career at TD Bank, where she managed technology training programs and quickly rose through various management roles. At Visa, she transitioned into her first executive position overseeing operations, technology, and fraud prevention. Her experience at Visa exposed her to boardroom dynamics, often as one of the few women present. This experience prepared her for leadership roles at Interac Association and SAS, leading teams in operations, fraud prevention, data management, AI, and analytics.
Currently, Amanda holds a prominent position at Deloitte, focusing on fraud prevention in the government sector. Her work is not just about advancing technology, its about helping government build and improve how they deliver services to citizens with security and integrity, reflecting her deep commitment to work that is impactful and value based.
Amanda is a strong advocate for women in STEM. She founded the SAS Women in Analytics program and mentors women in tech, promoting merit-based recognition and fostering inclusive environments.
Amanda’s achievements are numerous, but she is particularly proud of her role in modernizing technology for the Interac e-transfer system, supporting Canada’s move to chip, contactless and mobile payments, and enhancing fraud prevention capabilities. Her leadership style emphasizes empowering teams and leaving a positive impact.
Beyond her professional life, Amanda is passionate about photography, travel, and the arts, which provide a creative balance to her technical career. Amanda also actively supports a shared passion with her sister, the “midlifecurious” project, which explores and celebrates the transformative experiences of midlife, supporting women to live their best lives. Amanda sits on several boards and supports a variety of community groups and associations often, bringing her technology experience to the table.
Looking ahead, Amanda envisions a future filled with diverse projects and global collaborations, continuing to do what she loves while embracing new challenges and experiences.
