Ellie Dease
My name is Ellie Dease, and I completed my undergraduate studies here at Western in Linguistics and Spanish. My main areas of interest in linguistics are language reconstruction, revitalization, and the art of conlangs.
I have always been fascinated by the complexities of language. What began in childhood as a fascination with grammar and rules — and a tendency to hypercorrect my mother’s Appalachian accent — soon spiralled into a deep love for all linguistic forms of expression. A core belief of mine is recognizing that all linguistic variation, be it accent, dialect, modality, etc. is something to be celebrated. I chose to pursue my MA at Western to work under Prof. Tania Granadillo reconstructing Mapoyo, an endangered language indigenous to Venezuela. In my free time, I enjoy rock climbing, playing TTRPGs, and learning to cook.
