Contact Tracing

Western takes its direction from the Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) and Ontario’s  enhanced case and contact management strategy to help contain the spread of COVID-19.

What happens if Western is notified of a positive case on campus?

When there is a case identified in a classroom or unit, we directly and immediately inform students and instructors (in the case of a class) and employees (in the case of a unit). For cases in residence, students are immediately moved to an isolation location off-site, and we take direction from the MLHU regarding close contacts and other investigative measures.

Fully vaccinated students who are not experiencing COVID-19 symptoms may continue to attend class. Those not yet fully vaccinated who have been notified that they are a close contact are asked to attend Western’s vaccination and testing centre immediately for PCR testing and remain at home until they’ve received their test results and further direction is provided by the MLHU.

If the MLHU declares an on-campus outbreak or identifies there is a risk to the broader campus community, we will communicate this information through our COVID-19 website, email and social media, as we have done since the early days of the pandemic.

Additional COVID-19 resources for the campus community can be found on the Middlesex-London Health Unit’s website.

What can you do if you are notified of a positive case in your class?

  • If you are fully vaccinated, you are asked to monitor for symptoms of COVID-19.
  • If symptoms develop, self-isolate and get tested immediately at Western’s  vaccination and testing centre
  • If you are fully vaccinated and not experiencing COVID-19 symptoms you may continue to attend class.
  • All members of the campus community are reminded to self-monitor for symptoms, stay home if feeling unwell and get tested if symptoms develop.
  • If you are  not yet fully vaccinated, you are asked to attend Western’s vaccination and testing centre  immediately for PCR testing.
  • Please remain at home until you get your test results, and further direction is provided by the MLHU.

Additional information

In addition to Western’s mandatory vaccination policy there are a number of measures in place to keep the campus community safe including:

  • Mandatory three-layer, non-surgical masks (supplied by Western to all students and employees) in all indoor spaces.
  • Ventilation in all classrooms at Western meets – and in most cases exceeds – high standards of measurement to prevent potential airborne spread of coronavirus.
  • Daily health screening questionnaire, which faculty, staff and students receive by email and complete online.
  • An on-campus vaccination and testing centre.
  • Enhanced cleaning and sanitation measures throughout campus, particularly in dining, washrooms and high-traffic area.
  • Building safety ambassadors who help ensure COVID-19 protocols are being observed across campus.

While the Western community is a highly vaccinated population, COVID-19 remains present in the greater community. We thank our students, staff and faculty for continuing to adhere to health and safety protocols.
