Three confirmed positive COVID-19 cases in Perth Hall residence

The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) has declared a COVID-19 outbreak in Perth Hall residence, where there are currently three confirmed positive cases.

All 327 students living in Perth Hall are being notified. Those who have tested positive and some close contacts have been moved to a quarantine location outside of residence.

The university continues to work in close collaboration with the MLHU on testing and contact tracing.

Western is supporting students who have tested positive with quarantine transportation, meals, access to medical and mental health support as needed, and academic accommodations as necessary.

“As we see COVID-19 case numbers go up across the province and the country, we know this may be causing additional anxiety for our students at an already stressful time leading into the exam period,” says Jennifer Massey, Western’s associate vice-president (Student Experience). “We have extra staff on hand over the weekend to help support our students and answer any questions they or their families might have.”

The Perth outbreak is in addition to the one declared in Saugeen-Maitland Hall on Nov. 19, 2020. A previous outbreak in London Hall has been resolved.

Western students and employees who have COVID-19 symptoms or who have been notified by public health or the COVID Alert app they have been exposed to a confirmed case should self-isolate until they can be tested.

Approximately 7,800 COVID tests have been completed at Western’s COVID testing centre to date. Located in the Western Student Recreation Centre, the testing centre is open to students and employees Monday - Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In response to the pandemic, Western de-densified its nine residences to just under 70 per cent capacity (from a normal capacity of 5,303 to 3,589 currently).
