University-sanctioned travel update

March 05, 2020 1:00 PM

Western continues to monitor the ongoing situation with COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) and takes its direction and shares information from federal, provincial and local health authorities.

For travellers who have been to Hubei province (China) and Iran in the past 14 days:

  • Contact the Middlesex-London Health Unit’s (MLHU) Infectious Disease Control Team at 519-663-5317 within 24 hours of return to Canada, to arrange for monitoring, and;
  • Self-isolate and stay at home for 14 days since last being in Hubei province and Iran, and;
  • Self-monitor for fever, cough, or difficulty breathing.

This advice is for all travellers returning from Hubei province and Iran, regardless of whether or not they are currently experiencing symptoms.

Should these individuals develop symptoms, they are to:

  • Notify the MLHU Infectious Disease Control Team at 519-663-5317 immediately and;
  • Notify their healthcare provider prior to visiting any healthcare facility.

For travellers who have been to mainland China (excluding Hubei province), Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Singapore, or South Korea in the past 14 days:

  • Self monitor for fever, cough, or difficulty breathing for 14 days, and
  • Avoid crowded places.

Should any of these individuals develop symptoms of COVID-19 within 14 days of their return, they are to:

  • Self-isolate immediately, and;
  • Notify MLHU Infectious Disease Control Team at 519-663-5317 immediately for further assessment, and;
  • Notify their healthcare provider prior to visiting any healthcare facility.

If you are a Western student who cannot return to class for a period of time due to self-isolation, or require support of any kind, please contact Student Support and Case Management at 519-661-2111 x89152 or sscm@uwo.ca.

If you are a Western faculty or staff member who cannot return to work for a period of time due to required self-isolation, please speak with your supervisor/manager.

How to protect yourself

The Middlesex-London Health Unit recommends the following to stay healthy and to prevent the spread of viruses:

  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Wash your hands with soap and warm water often, for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with your sleeve; or cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue, then throw the tissue in the garbage.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Clean and disinfect high-touch objects and surfaces frequently.

University-sanctioned travel - updated March 5

Due to current Government of Canada travel advisories, all university-sanctioned travel for Western students to mainland China and Iran has been cancelled until further notice.

Western has also cancelled all university-sanctioned student travel from March 1 to September 1, 2020 for the following destinations that have been identified by the Government of Canada as affected by COVID-19: Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea.

University-sanctioned travel includes exchange, research placements, field courses, conference travel, or any other travel that has been approved, authorized or supported by a Western University unit, department, staff or faculty member.

While Western’s Safety Abroad Policy does not govern faculty and staff travel, we strongly encourage all members of the campus community to follow Government of Canada travel advice and advisories. Additional information and resources are available on Western’s Safety Abroad website
