Re: COVID-19 and Spring Convocation

To our graduating students and all members of the Western community:

I’m writing to inform you that we have decided to postpone Western’s spring convocation as part of our larger response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes all scheduled ceremony dates from May 22 through June 19.

This difficult decision was made earlier today by the University’s Convocation Board. I regret having to share such disappointing news and wanted you to know as soon as possible.

Our decision was made with guidance from public health authorities and with the best interests of our community at heart, particularly those of our graduating students and their families, as well as the many faculty and staff whose efforts make convocation such a joyous occasion.

We realize this will come as an enormous disappointment to our graduating students, especially after you have persevered these last few weeks to complete your studies in the face of such extraordinary challenges. You have worked hard, made countless sacrifices, and learned so much during your time at Western — achievements that deserve to be celebrated in accordance with your alma mater’s longstanding traditions.

We are deeply sorry that we cannot mark this important milestone in your life the way we want to at this time.

However, for those of you who are graduating, your degrees will be conferred this Spring, and we will ensure that your graduation “awarded” status is reflected on your official transcript. If you haven’t already done so, please be sure to apply to graduate by visiting the Office of the Registrar’s website at: https://registrar.uwo.ca/academics/convocation/applying_to_graduate.html

We are also committed to enabling you to participate in a future convocation ceremony after the threat of the pandemic has safely subsided. We will provide further updates on this as our contingency plans develop. I hope you will return to campus then so we can celebrate your achievements together.

In the meantime, on behalf of all of us here at Western, I want to congratulate those of you on the verge of becoming newly minted Western alumni.

We are very proud of all you’ve accomplished at Western and we look forward to welcoming you into our "Purple and Proud" family which includes more than 300,000 graduates worldwide.

Yours sincerely,
