COVID-19 Update for the Campus Community
April 19, 2021 5:30 PM
Dear Western Community Members,
On April 16, the provincial government announced enhanced public health and workplace safety measures to interrupt the transmission of COVID-19. These measures are in addition to the province-wide, stay-at-home order, which has been extended to at least May 20, 2021.
We want to remind you about the steps Western has taken to comply with these measures and provide some important health and safety protocol reminders.
No-contact pick-up of collections is available at Weldon Library only. All current digital and remote services continue.
The Western Student Recreation Centre and Thompson Athletic and Recreation Centre are closed, as are all outdoor recreational facilities, including volleyball and basketball courts.
A reminder, gathering in any university spaces, indoor or outdoor, is not permitted.
To prioritize the health and safety of our campus community, only the lower-level essential health services in the University Community Centre (UCC) remain open, including Workplace Health at Western, Student Health Care and University Pharmacy and essential services: Campus Vision, UCC Dental and Western Chiropractic.
Essential construction on campus continues, with health and safety protocols in place.
Occupancy in Western’s research spaces remains at 30 per cent capacity. All face-to-face research with human participants on campus and in the field is paused, unless directly related to COVID-19 or otherwise approved on a case-by-case basis using the two-level process already in place. For more information, visit: www.uwo.ca/research/covid19_updates.html.
Access to campus for employees
All buildings on campus remain locked. Virtual meetings should continue.
All university employees should continue to work from home if the nature of their work does not require them to be on campus. Faculty, staff and graduate students with permission can continue to have access to campus for individual work.
Those on campus must wear three-layer non-medical masks issued by the university rather than cloth masks, indoors and in the presence of others. All faculty and staff must complete the ‘Return to Campus’ questionnaire prior to each visit to campus.
If physical distancing of six feet cannot be maintained, eye protection (face shield or goggles) must be worn in addition to the three-layer non-medical mask.
Summer term courses
As announced in February, most spring and summer term courses will be completed online. Limited exceptions include some clinical in-person learning that supports health-related programs, and approved non-health related programs (i.e. labs, studios, music) that cannot be modified for virtual delivery. These in-person classes will continue to closely follow all COVID-19 health and safety protocols.
As the COVID-19 vaccine rolls out across our province, all members of our campus community are encouraged to get vaccinated based on eligibility requirements.
We know this has been a long and difficult fight. As you do everything you can to limit the spread of COVID-19, please also remember to prioritize your own health and well-being. Reach out to friends, family, colleagues, instructors and supervisors, and consider the supports outlined below.
While Ontario is being hit particularly hard by the third wave of the pandemic right now, we know brighter days are ahead.
Thank you for your continued support and perseverance.

Acting Provost & Vice-President (Academic)
