A. Dorothy Turville Gold Medal

Awarded to a student in an Honors Bachelor degree graduating with a double Major in French and Spanish. The medal and monetary award were endowed by the Undergraduate Women's Organization and by Dr. R. B. Willis respectively.

Value: 1 @ $750 and a Gold Medal

A. Dorothy Turville Undergrad. Language Travelling Fellowships

Awarded annually on a competitive basis to undergraduates registered in the constituent University who are entering the third or fourth year of an Honors Bachelor degree in either an Honors Specialization in French, German or Spanish; or a Double Major that includes a Major module in one or more of these subjects. Preference will be given to students studying French and to those who propose to teach French in elementary or secondary schools. Part-Time students will be eligible for the Fellowship, provided that they have completed the full second year of their Honors Specialization.

Value: $2,500 for students taking year three abroad in Europe, and $500 for students taking year three in Quebec (Non Renewable)
Application: Applications should be submitted by students prior to the last day of classes each year to the Chair of the Departments of French, and Modern Languages and Literatures.

A. Grace Crawforth Bursary

Awarded to a student in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities who is registered in an Honors Specialization in English Language and Literature or French Language and Literature, or a double Major in English or French, with who demonstrated financial need.  This bursary was established through Foundation Western by Miss A. Grace Crawforth. This bursary qualifies for the Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS) program and recipients must meet Ontario residency requirements.

Value: 1 at $900 Effective: 2015-2016 academic year
Application: Online financial need assessment forms must be completed through the Office of the Registrar's Web site by October 31.


A. Grace Crawforth OSOTF Bursary

Awarded to a student in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities majoring in English and/or French who demonstrates financial need. This fund was established through Foundation Western.

Value: 1 @ $1,400

Catherine Mary Bowie Travelling Award

Awarded to a full-time undergraduate student entering third or fourth year of an Honors Bachelor degree in either an Honors Specialization in French Language and Literature or a double Major including French. Recipients must have a minimum academic average of 75%, and must enroll in a course of study for which departmental approval has been received. Applications can be obtained from the Department of French and must be submitted by students prior to the last day of classes to the Chair of the Department. The recipient will be selected by the Department of French. This award was established through Foundation Western by Margaret and George Bowie to honor the memory of their daughter, Catherine Mary Bowie (BEd'83, HBA'82, BA'80).

Dr. W. Sherwood Fox Award

Awarded annually to a student in any year of any program attending the spring or summer session at Trois Pistoles based on academic achievement in French courses and demonstrated financial need.  The Office of the Registrar will determine financial need and the recipient will be selected by the Director of the Western Centre for Continuing Studies in consultation with the administrator of the Trois Pistoles program. This award was established by a gift from the late W. Sherwood Fox.

Value: $800
Application: Applications are available through the Office of the Registrar and must be completed by April 15 for the spring session and June 15 for summer session.


Harriet Beatrice Freele Scholarship

Awarded to an outstanding student (minimum average 80%) in entering the third year of an Honors Specialization or Major offered by the Departments of French or Modern Languages and Literatures. (Endowed by the Lloyd C. A. Hodgins Estate.)

Harry C. Steels Bursary

Available to a financially needy student registered in any year of any program in Modern Languages or French. This bursary was established through Foundation Western by Mrs. T.C. Joyce in memory of her father, Harry C. Steels.

Value: 1 @ $600

K.P.R. Neville Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to a student with an average of at least 80% who is entering second year of an Honors Bachelor degree with a double Major in English Language and Literature and French, English Language and Literature and German, or English Language and Literature and History.

Value: $300

Marguerite R. Dow Canadian Heritage Award

Awarded to a Canadian citizen or permanent resident registered in any undergraduate or graduate program at Western who submits, in English or French, any personal and recent work of creative writing, in any genre or length, on a theme of Canadian Heritage, that has not so far been published or entered in any other competition. Established through the generosity of Marguerite R. Dow, Professor Emerita, The University of Western Ontario, who taught English and Drama in the Faculty of Education from 1965 to 1985.

Value: Up to $1,000. The number and value may vary at the discretion of the selection committee
Application: Application should be directed to the Associate Dean of Arts by February 1.


Mary R. Stewart Scholarship

Awarded to a student entering third year of an Honors Bachelor degree with a double Major in English Language and Literature and French, who achieved the highest academic average in second year. In the case of a tie, preference will be given to a female student. The Faculty of Arts and Humanities Scholarships and Awards Committee will select the recipient. This scholarship was established by a generous bequest from Mary R. Stewart (HBA '39) through Foundation Western.

Sir C.E. Saunders-M.E. Anderson Scholarship

Awarded to a student graduating in the Honors Specialization in French Language and Literature program.

Value: 1 @ $500 Effective: 2008-2009 academic year.
Application: None required.


Sir C.E. Saunders-M.E. Anderson Awards

Awarded to a student registered in the constituent University and entering the French Studies Department's third-year abroad program in France (Nice-Exchange). A minimum average of 75% in French courses is required. Also awarded to a student entering the third-year at Laval Program. A minimum average of 75% in French courses is required.

Value: 2 @ $1500 (Nice) and 1 @ $500 (Laval)

Sir Wilfrid Laurier Memorial Prize

Awarded annually to a Canadian citizen (by birth or naturalization) whose native tongue is not French and who demonstrates a proficiency in French conversation. Students completing a French conversation course in the final year of their degree program are eligible to receive this award.

Value: Number of awards will vary annually to a combined total of $650

Stephanie Spinks French Scholarship

Awarded to a full-time undergraduate student in any year beyond year one of a French program with a minimum 85% academic average. This scholarship was established through Foundation Western by a bequest from Stephanie Spinks (BA'60, French).

Study Abroad in Aix-Marseille Award

Awarded to full-time undergraduate students (from all Faculties in the Constituent University) who are enrolled in a module in French Studies and will participate in the Study Abroad in Aix-Marseille program during the year they receive the award. In order to apply, a student must have maintained an average of at least 70% in the previous year and must enroll in a course of study for which departmental approval has been received. This award was established in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities through a University initiative to promote internationalization of the curriculum and of the student experience at Western. Applications should be submitted by students at least four months prior to the first day of the study-abroad semester to the Chair of the Department of French Studies.

Value: $2,500 per term - Up to 20 awards per year.

Tillie Jensen Eklund Continuing Award

Awarded to a full-time student in Year 2 of any four-year Bachelor's degree program with an Honors Specialization, Specialization or Major in French based on academic achievement (minimum 70% average) and demonstrated financial need. This award will continue for Years 3 and 4 if the student maintains the defined criteria. This award was established by Ms. Catherine Jensen in memory of her aunt Tillie Jensen Eklund (BA 1947, French) through Foundation Western.

Value: 1 at $1,000, continuing for 3 years NOTE: Only one student can be in receipt of this award in any given year.
Application: Applications can be accessed online through Student Center and must be submitted by September 30. The Office of the Registrar will determine financial need and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities will select the recipient.

 


W.C.P. Baldwin and Lucile Baldwin Scholarship

Awarded to students in an Honors Bachelor degree entering their second year of an Honors Specialization in French Language and Literature, Linguistics and Literature, or French Language and Linguistics, or a double Major including French, who have achieved at least an 80% average at the end of first year, and who will not be recipients of any other scholarship of $3,000 or above. Endowed by Mr. and Mrs. W. C. P. Baldwin with Foundation Western.

Wade-Walters Scholarship

Awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student entering fourth year who has excelled in Eighteenth Century Studies in an Honors Specialization in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Preference will be given to a student specializing in the study of Voltaire (either in French or English). The recipient will be selected by the Scholarship and Awards Committee in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. This scholarship is given in honour of the distinguished Princeton Voltaire scholar, Ira O. Wade, who early in his career spent two years teaching in the Department of Romance Languages at The University of Western Ontario, and is offered in appreciation by his student Dr. Robert L. Walters, Professor Emeritus, who taught at Western in the Department of French from 1963 to 1987.

Western University French Immersion Bursary

Awarded annually to students who demonstrate financial need and are registered in a credit course at Western's French Immersion School. Students in receipt of an Explore Bursary are not eligible to apply. Application forms are available at the Office of the Registrar or the French Immersion School Office. This bursary was established with Foundation Western by donations from Trois-Pistoles Alumni and friends.

Value: 2 at $2,000 Effective: 2014-2015 academic year
Application forms must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar by May 15 for spring session and July 15 for summer session.


Western University French Immersion OSOTF Bursary

Awarded annually to students who demonstrate financial need and are registered in a credit course at Western's French Immersion School. Students in receipt of an Explore Bursary are not eligible to apply. Application forms are available at the Office of the Registrar or the French Immersion School Office. This bursary was established with Foundation Western by donations from Trois-Pistoles Alumni and friends. This gift qualifies for the Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund (OSOTF). Recipients must meet Ontario residency requirements.

Value: 2 at $2,000 Effective: 2014-2015 academic year
Application forms must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar by May 15 for spring session and July 15 for summer session.


Wilfred and Zeta O'Donnell Travelling Fellowship

Awarded to undergraduate students registered in the constituent University either full or part-time, who have completed two years of an Honors BA with either an Honors Specialization or double Major modules in the Department of Classical Studies, French Studies, or Modern Languages and Literatures, at Western. In order to apply, a student must have a minimum academic standing of 75% and must enroll in a course of study for which departmental approval has been received.

Value: $6,500 available annually, up to $2,000 per student for study in Europe and up to $500 per student for study in Quebec
