A letter to the Class of 2021 Spring Graduates from Angie Mandich, Director of Convocation

March 12, 2021

Dear colleagues and students,

I am writing to inform you that a decision has been made to postpone Western’s Spring 2021 convocation as part of our larger response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes all scheduled ceremony dates in May and June 2021.

This difficult decision was again made by the University’s Convocation Board following guidance from public health authorities and with the continued best interests of our community at heart.

For those graduating this Spring, we know this news will be particularly disappointing, especially as our community looks forward to planning for in-person campus activity beginning in the Fall of 2021.

Please know your degrees and diplomas will be officially conferred, and your certificates officially awarded on the following dates:

May 13, 2021, Huron Theology
June 5, 2021, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry (MD)
June 11, 2021, Richard Ivey School of Business (Graduate Programs Spring)
June 18, 2021, all other undergraduate and graduate degrees

In addition, your graduation “awarded” status will be reflected on your official transcript on your conferral date. Additional information about obtaining your degree will follow shortly but all students are encouraged to monitor the Office of the Registrar’s website for updates. Plans are already underway to celebrate your achievements virtually in June, just as we did with the Class of 2020 graduates.

News of this postponement may also come as a disappointment for those who graduated in 2020 and were awaiting news regarding in-person celebrations. Please be assured Western is committed to providing all graduates the opportunity to participate in a future celebratory ceremony when it is safe to do so. At this time, the University is planning to host in-person celebrations for our 2020 and 2021 graduates beginning in the fall of 2021. Updates will be provided as contingency plans develop.

In the meantime, on behalf of the University, we congratulate those about to graduate. We are proud of all you’ve accomplished and look forward to welcoming you into the Western alumni family.

Sincerely,

Dr. Angie Mandich
Director, Convocation
Director, School of Occupational Therapy
