Canadian Mesonet Project Update (v2025.05.20): Hail Measurements (and other minor updates)!
This update to the Canadian Mesonet Portal introduces hail impact reporting from the Hail(STORM) network of stations, the ability to view the "Maximum Estimated Size of Hail" (MESH) radar product from the Multi-Radar/Multi-Sensor (MRMS) project at the National Severe Storms Laboratory, more ways to change your display settings, and bug fixes to the weather alert pop-ups.
Hail Impact Reporting
We're pleased to announce that the hail impact reports provided by the Hail(STORM) network of stations is finally live. This report will provide the number of overall hail impacts, as well as a breakdown of size distribution via a gridded heat map. This charting will have the same capabilities as all of our other charts (the ability to click and drag to zoom, hovering to view the exact data, etc.).
Maximum Estimated Size of Hail (MESH)
The Maximum Estimated Size of Hail" (MESH) radar product from the Multi-Radar/Multi-Sensor (MRMS) project at the National Severe Storms Laboratory has been added to the map. This layer supports the ability to view the MESH product from varying time intervals (30min to 24hr). It can also be extruded to show the 3D data. This layer is now available in the map layers.
Present Weather
Some observation stations report present weather (either through automated or manned observations). These present weather observations give a text description of the weather in that area. The current present weather observations are now provided as text below the station name.
Display Settings
You are now able to control at what zoom level the detailed observations appear. This is helpful to finetune your view depending on which monitor you are viewing the data on.
Minor Changes
There are also minor bug fixes to the weather alert pop-ups, additional attribution / disclaimer information added, as well as the changes to the backend that will eventually allow for the creation of an API for downloading this data.
