Team Misener conducts fieldwork at CWG2022

Prof. Laura Misener (Principal Investigator), Post-Doctorate fellow, Dr. Nancy Quinn (PhD, 2020), and Erin Pearson (PhD Candidate, 2024) conducted fieldwork onsite the 2022 Commonwealth Games in August. The team's research took place at the main event sites in Birmingham, UK as well as additional event sites in Warwick and Coventry.

This project aims to examine how para sport, para sport athletes, and their support personnel are socially recognized throughout the XXI Commonwealth Games. For the research team, this included examining all aspects of the integrated sport event such as the overall accessibility and marketing of the event, to the experience of spectators, athletes, and volunteers. The potential outcomes from this research may include greater resource allocation, sustained commitment to the development of para sport, and accessible participation opportunities for people with disabilities in low resource nations, to ensure more robust social recognition of para sport at future Commonwealth Games.

Congratulations to the research team and best wishes for the next steps of this project!

Doctoral student and Prof. Doherty engaged in ERASMUS+ funded project

Justin Robar (PhD Candidate, 2024) and his supervisor, Prof. Alison Doherty are engaged with a European-based project funded by the Erasmus+ program titled, "Integration of Newly Arrived Migrants through Organised Sport (INAMOS)." As associate partners, Justin and Prof. Doherty are providing a Canadian comparison case, along with Australia, to the six European countries involved in the project. Key stakeholders in community sport clubs across Canada that are involved with newcomer-focused programming have been interviewed to gain an understanding of capacity, challenges, and willingness of these clubs to initiate, run, and maintain these kinds of programs. This research project aims to use the information to better leverage sport clubs in Europe and Canada to assist with the ongoing goal of the integration of newcomers.

Congratulations and best wishes to the scholars! For more information, please visit inamos.org.

Dr. Mac Ross pens an article on addressing athlete abuse in Canadian sport

Dr. Mac Ross has authored an article for The Conversation Canada titled, 'Addressing athlete abuse in Canadian sport requires internal change and external investigators.' Prof. Alison Doherty and Western Sport Management alumni, Prof. Eric MacIntosh (PhD, 2007) and Dr. Shannon Kerwin (PhD, 2010) have published an article for the Sport Information Resource Centre (SIRC) titled, "'I feel (un)safe when…': What athletes have to say about high performance culture." In their article, the research team presents its findings about Canadian high performance athletes' perspectives on safe and unsafe sport environments, as well as recommendations for change. Athletes identified coach behaviour, teammate or fellow athlete behaviour, lack of resources, and an inattentive sport system as key factors contributing to unsafe sporting environments. Implementing initiatives to target these issues can support the shift to a safer sport environment (e.g., requiring coaches to undertake self-awareness and self-regulation training that promote safe coach behaviour).
