December 2017

Western goes to SMAANZ! 

The 2017 Sport Management Association of Australia and New Zealand conference was hosted by the Department of Tourism, Sport and Hotel Management at Griffith University in Gold Coast, Australia. Dr. Laura Misener, Dr. Jim Weese and Francesca Gable (MA Candidate, 2018) represented Western Sport Management down under.

Francesca presented a paper in the Sport for Development track titled, “Building resilience through sport: Developing student mentors” in conjunction with Dr. Misener. Dr. Misener presented a paper in the same track titled, “Building capacity for sport development: Parental perceptions of participation benefits” with her colleagues Marijke Taks, B. Christine Green and Laurence Chalip. She also gave a talk highlighting how opportunities from the event portfolio can be maximized using event leveraging and/or ambush marketing.

November 2017

The Sport Management team congratulates the Western Mustangs on the Vanier Cup! 

he Western Mustangs capped off a perfect season, defeating the Laval Rouge et Or by a score of 39 to 17 to win their seventh Vanier Cup. Several students and faculty members made the trip to Hamilton to support the team, including Professor Karen Danylchuk, pictured here with Sport Management alumnus, Zach Weese (MA 2017).

Coach Greg Marshall and his players received nation-wide acclaim for their fantastic performance. Congratulations to the Mustangs on a fantastic season!

Prof. Karen Danylchuk delivers keynote at NTSU Conference 

Professor Karen Danylchuk attended an international Sport Management conference hosted by the National Taiwan Sport University (NTSU), and delivered a keynote titled, "Sport and Recreation Management Industry Trends:  How does Sport Management Education Interface with these Trends?"

In her capacity as President of the World Association for Sport Management (WASM), Prof. Danylchuk presented a plaque to Dr. Jin-Hsiung Kao, President of NTSU in celebration of their 30th anniversary. Additional details about WASM are available on its website here.

Team Western runners-up in inaugural Waterloo Sport Management case competition 

Congratulations to undergrad sport management students Michael Gencarelli, Lucas Macrae, Yvonne Pan, Vanessa Tse, and Celine Zhen who finished second to Windsor in a very tight case competition held at the University of Waterloo in early November. Eight teams from Brock, Laurentian, Waterloo, Western and Windsor developed and presented a plan for the growth of Point Guard College, a premier basketball development program owned by Canadian and Waterloo grad Mano Watsa. Mr. Watsa engaged with each team throughout the day and was a final judge of the winning case.

Western Sport Management connections present at NASSS

Western University was well-represented at the 2017 North American Society for the Sociology of Sport conference, held from November 1st – 4th in Windsor, ON. The theme of the conference was Sport Matters: Physics, Politics, Performances, Pedagogies. Current Western students, Nancy Quinn (PhD Candidate) and Kerri Bodin (MA Candidate) presented their research as part of the exciting roster of presentations discussing this theme.

Recent Western alumni Kristen Rogalsky (PhD candidate, Waterloo), Dr. Kyle Rich (Lecturer, Brock), and Dr. Patti Millar (Assistant Professor, Windsor) also presented at the conference. For more information on the presentations and topics discussed, head to the 2017 NASSS website.

October 2017

Convocation brings sport management team together 

Western’s School of Kinesiology held its convocation ceremony on 26th October. Sport management graduates pictured here include Dr. Kyle Rich (PhD 2017), and MA students, Matt Brazier, Tatiana Stolf, Amanda Cosentino, Quinn Henderson, and Zach Weese.

Additional 2017 MA graduates include Marika Kay, Rob Carlisi, Varun Singh, Alex Mai, Ross Bailey, and Phil N’Djore-Acka. Western wishes its graduates the best of luck in their future endeavours!

Sport Management alumna thriving in her role as Director of FireRock Golf Club 

Amanda Cosentino, MA Sport Management (2017), is the Director of FireRock Golf Club, a role she took over in July 2016. She is the only female to hold the position within the London region, and to work on the Golf Ontario advisory panel that collaborates with Golf Canada to shape the future of the game.

At Western, Cosentino was a standout basketball player. Her master’s thesis focused on women in leadership in professional sports. She was recently featured on LondonOntarioGolf.com. The article can be read here

Dr. Laura Misener delivers keynote address at VISTA 2017

The eighth VISTA Conference was held in Toronto from September 20 - 24. This was the largest Vista Conference to date, and the event was attended by 300 sport scientists and researchers from 41 countries. The Conference was organized through a partnership with the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC), and the Canadian Sport Institute Ontario (CSIO).

Dr. Laura Misener, Associate Professor, Sport Management, presented a keynote address on the concluding day entitled, "The Paralympic Games and Social Impact: Beyond the Rhetoric." Dr. Misener's talk focussed on opportunities for participation in sport, attitudes toward disability, and overall governance of disability sport.

The conference was very successful, and featured 132 oral and poster presentations, and 10 interactive workshops. Abstracts from the conference and additional details can be found on the VISTA 2017 website.

Western Sport Management well represented at SCRI Conference

The 2017 Sport Canada Research Initiative (SCRI) Conference organized by the Sport Information Resources Centre (SIRC) was held in Toronto from September 19 - 20. 

Dr. Laura Misener, Associate Professor, Sport Management, made a plenary presentation titled, "Leveraging Parasport Events for Sustainable Community Participation."

In addition, Prof. Alison Doherty, and her students, Ryan Clutterbuck (Phd Candidate) and Swarali Patil (MA Candidate) presented posters. Additional details on the conference including knowledge transfer papers can be found here.

Prof. Alison Doherty delivers keynote speech at EASM Conference 

Prof. Alison Doherty delivered a keynote lecture at the 25th European Association for Sport Management (EASM) Conference, held from September 6 - 8 in Bern, Switzerland. Her presentation, titled "Turning a Critical Lens on Social Inclusion and Volunteering," encourages us to consider additional and alternative insights by critiquing assumptions about what we know about inclusion in sport and volunteering.

MA Candidate chosen for Student Innovation Scholars program 

Swarali Patil, Sport Management MA candidate (2018), has been chosen for the Graduate Student Innovation Scholars (SIS) program. Facilitated by Research Western, the SIS program is offered by WorlDiscoveries in conjunction with Propel Entrepreneurship and Ivey Business School’s Pierre L. Morrissette Institute for Entrepreneurship.

The program is very competitive, and only accepts 9 students per term; 3 students from Ivey Business School, and 6 students from the remaining faculties at Western. Students work in teams of 3, and receive training in Intellectual Property, Entrepreneurship, Knowledge Transfer, and Commercialization. The program is aimed at skill development of graduate students across all disciplines, continued career growth in careers beyond academia, and improved work ethic and business accomplishments.

At the conclusion of the program, each student receives a certificate of merit and an award of $1500. Additional details about the program and the syllabus can be found here.

Western Sport Management team wins the inaugural SEBC event 

Western University has won the inaugural Sporting Event Bid Competition (SEBC). Team members include Kerri Bodin (MA 2018), Swarali Patil (MA 2018), Nicole Baranowski (BA 2019), and Aryan Eftekhari (HBA and BA 2019), supervised by Dr. Laura Misener (Acting Director, School of Kinesiology).

Western's submission was one of sixteen, and the team was announced as a top-3 finalist on May 1, 2017. The final presentations were held at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor on September 8, 2017, where Western was announced as the winner! The team has been awarded with certificates of merit and a cash prize of USD 5000.

Internships and Volunteer Opportunities with the Knights

Local Ontario Ice Hockey League (OHL) team, the London Knights are offering various internships and volunteer opportunities for the 2017-18 season.

Research for Paralympic sport 

Dr. Laura Misener has joined the first Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC), and attended its inaugural meeting. The aim of the meeting was to gather an interdisciplinary group of social science researchers working in the disability sport space, to develop a strategic research agenda in partnership with the CPC.

Researchers from eight Universities met with CPC staff and partners to discuss issues and challenges facing CPC, as they strive to become the Leading Paralympic Nation by 2022. Read more about the CPC and their work here.

Supporting the development of women in coaching

Prof. Alison Doherty is supporting the Coaches Association of Ontario, Ontario 150 program "Changing the Game – Changing the Conversation" aimed at developing women in coaching.

She is serving as a mentor coach to several apprentice coaches in the London area.

WASM brings together scholars, practioners, professionals, and students from around the world to share expertise, knowledge, and new ideas about the global venture that is sport.

The 2017 WASM Conference was held in Kaunas, Lithuania from June 20-23, 2017. The Conference was attended by 200 delegates from 42 countries. Additional details about the event can be found here.

Sport Management Faculty and graduate students represented Western at the 2017 North American Society for Sport Management Conference in Denver, Colorado. PhD student, Brendan Riggin presented a paper titled, "Assessing an Amateur Ice Hockey League Corporate Community Involvement Initiative."

Sport Management quartet earn a spot in the finals of the SEBC 

Sport Management students, Nicole Baranowski (BA 2019), Kerri Bodin (MA 2018), Aryan Eftekhari (BA 2019), and Swarali Patil (MA 2018) under the supervision of faculty supervisor, Dr. Laura Misener have been selected as top-3 finalists in the Sport Event Bid Competition (SEBC).

Organized by the University of Michigan, the SEBC has teams prepare a bid for the city of their choice to host the (fictional) 2028 "Global Games".  The goal was to generate and share new ideas about how event organizers, host cities, sport institutions, and other stakeholders can collaborate to deliver major sporting events.  

Our Western team, whose event was to be hosted in Toronto, will face the University of Texas at Austin and Ohio University on September 8, 2017 in the finals of the competition.

The new interdisciplinary research group spans across the different pillars of the Department of Kinesiology and connects researchers examining the diverse social impacts of sport.

Faculty and students attend the Annual KGSA Symposium

The Kinesiology Graduate Students Association (KGSA) hosted its third annual research Symposium. Students across various disciplines in Kinesiology including BioSciences, Socio-Cultural Studies, and Sport Management presented their research to their peers and faculty members.

The three best presentations and posters were awarded with a certificate of merit. Sport management winners include Francesca Gable (Top-3 poster), Swarali Patil (Top-3 oral presentation), and Kyle Rich (Research and Service Award).

Professor Karen Danylchuk attended the Latin American Association for Sport Management conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

She delivered the keynote at the Conference entitled, "Global trends in the sport industry:  Predictions for 2017." Additional information about the conference is available here.

Professor Karen Danylchuk attended the Forum held in Macau, China. The forum held discussions on contemporary trends in sports and leisure.

Professor Alison Doherty collaborated with sport management colleagues in the Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine at Bond University, Gold Coast for three weeks in February 2017. She was a keynote speaker at the Bond University Interdisciplinary Colloquium on Sport, and she also visited the Surfing Australia HQ.
