Academic Events
Beyond publishing Olympika and the Symposium Proceedings, and providing research and infrastructural support, the International Centre for Olympic Studies (ICOS) serves its academic community through key activities, including Scholarly Lectures and Symposia.
Biennial International Symposia for Olympic Studies
Every Olympic year, ICOS hosts the International Symposium for Olympic and Paralympic Research. The first Symposium was held in 1992. This year, the sixteenth Symposium will be held on July 20-21, 2024, in Besançon, France, hosted by the University of Franche-Comté, and titled "Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in the Olympic Games."
Scholarly Lecture and Address Cycles
ICOS organizes and hosts scholarly lectures and addresses in three Lecture Series cycles. These lectures cover historical and topical issues in Olympic and Paralympic research. The series are named in honor of scholars and administrators who have made significant contributions to Olympic research or the advancement of the Olympic and Paralympic movement.
Homecoming Lectures, Established in 2022
ICOS was excited to announce a new Homecoming event, “Western at the Olympics," co-sponsored by the Western Mustang Athletic Alumni. In 2024 it featured guest lecturer Darda Sales. Sales is a three-time Paralympian in swimming and a Paralympic gold and silver medallist.
