Novenas, Medieval Saints, and Printing in Spanish America
Join us for a talk by Jason Dyck, a librarian at Western's Weldon Library and a medievalist.
Spanish American printers promoted medieval saints in prayer booklets called novenas. Of the roughly 3121 novenas they printed between 1665 and 1821, 516 (15.6%) were devoted to people who earned reputations for their sanctity in the Middle Ages. This talk offers some reflections on what these printing patterns teach us about colonial societies and ongoing interpretations of the so-called "medieval heritage" in Latin America.
Following the presentation there will be a mixer for all faculty and students in Medieval Studies.
