Examining Identity, Power and Positionality in Teaching and Learning

In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their social identities and how these identities impact their experiences in educational environments. We will define and explore the concepts of social position, power, and positionality. Participants will be invited to reflect on their own positionality (socio-historical location) and its impact in shaping perspectives and interactions in the classroom, across all disciplines. We will explore how positionality affects interactions, decision-making, and biases by working through case studies. By the end of the session, participants will develop recognition of power dynamics and their impact on teaching and learning, and explore alternative educational designs that consider diversity and create space where all voices can be heard.
