Adventure Running

Do you like to explore? Adventure running is a combination of cross country running, navigation and geocaching. Campers will be exposed to many obstacles as they explore Western University campus and will learn the basics of navigation and geocaching.

Aqua Sport

Age: senior (8-11 yrs) only 

Join our experienced instructors for a week of aquatic fun! Experience a different aquatic sport daily and wrap up the week with a mini-Olympic style competition. Youth will have the opportunity to try sports such as: water polo, synchronized swimming, competitive swimming (starts, turns and finishes), snorkeling, water fitness and more. Dry land activities will complement the in pool instruction.

Prerequisite: All participants MUST be able to swim comfortably without a lifejacket in deep water.

Aquatic Leadership (Bronze Medallion & Emergency First Aid CPR-B)

Age: 13+

Bronze Medallion teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water-rescue education - judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn tows and carries, and defense methods and releases in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a 500 m timed swim.

Prerequisite: 
All participants MUST be a minimum of 13 years of age OR have Bronze Star certification.

Aquatic Leadership (Bronze Cross & Standard First Aid CPR-C)

Age: 13+

Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for all advanced training programs including National Lifeguard Service certification.

Prerequisite: All participants MUST have Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid with CPR-B certification.

Price: $140 (full day)

Archery

Age: senior (8-11 yrs) only 

"Archers to the line." "Nock your arrows." "Fire when ready." Campers will learn the basics of archery. They will develop their skills by learning from experienced instructors in a safe and fun environment. All archery specific equipment is provided. However, in the event of inclement weather, alternate activities will be provided for campers at an indoor location.

Art

Age: junior (4-7 yrs) & senior (8-11 yrs) programming offered 

Be prepared to get messy! Creativity is messy and children will be provided with the space to be creative daily. Campers will not only learn different techniques but also will also be exposed to different mediums. Possible areas of focus include drawing, cartooning, sculpting and painting. All young artists will produce works of art that will be brought home at the end of the week. Parents and family are welcome and encouraged to attend the Friday Sport Western art show! Details will be provided each week.

Ball Hockey

Age: senior (8-11 yrs) only 

Sport Western ball hockey camp will allow young hockey players to develop their stick handling, passing, and shooting skills. The camp will be fast paced and fun! Daily games will be played with a final competition on Friday. 

Prerequisite: All participants are encouraged to bring their own stick, gloves and helmet (If unable to bring equipment, equipment will be provided).

Baseball

A new addition to the camp offerings for 2016 the Sport Western baseball camp will provide youth with an opportunity to develop their fundamental skills and understanding of the game. Campers will learn or refine their throwing, catching, fielding, hitting, and sliding skills. Daily games will be played with a final competition on Friday a Westminster field.

Prerequisite: All participants are encouraged to bring their own glove.

Campers will learn from the best with instruction from the Western Mustangs men's and women's basketball team. There will be a strong focus on fundamental development and fun. Campers will learn the basics, to dribbling, passing, shooting, and defense. The camp will culminate with "game day" on Friday.

Basketball Fundamentals

Age: 8-15 yrs

This camp is perfect for the basketball enthusiast. Campers will improve upon their basic skills while acquiring new ones. Instruction will be provided by the Western Mustangs men's and women's basketball team. Staff will use the Canada Basketball's LTAD model to tailor drills and programming. In addition, other complimentary games and activities will be used to develop important basic motor skills. Overall the camp will be FUN, active and will provide youth with an opportunity to develop their fundamental skills and understanding of the game.

Cheerleading

GO MUSTANGS GO! That's right not only will campers learn all the Mustangs cheers but also they will learn the basics of cheerleading from our very own national champions. Learn the basics of tumbling and the fundamentals of lifting.

Dance

This program offers an introduction to basic dance skill and technique. A combination of styles will be introduced, such as jazz, hip hop, and ballet. Participants will work toward an informal presentation of choreographed patterns at the end of the week. Friends and family are welcome to attend the Friday performance.

Drama

Age: 11-13 yrs

Lights, camera, action! Campers will be introduced to the world of acting and performing. Instructors will work to develop campers' individual skills and techniques as well as teach the foundations of performance. Campers will leave with a better understanding of acting terminology and increased self-esteem. The week will conclude with a group performance on Friday and family and friends are welcome to attend.

Fencing

Age: 9-12 yrs & 12-15 yrs (limited programming offered for this age group)

Learn about the exciting, fast and furious world of fencing! Participants will have fun building strength, agility, and stamina as they come to know one of the oldest sports in history. Fencing will be taught using the classic foil technique. At the end of the week fencers will have the basic skills needed to compete in their first in-house tournament. Instruction will be provided by the Western varsity fencing team. All fencing equipment will be supplied but campers are encouraged to bring long pants for protection. Please note there is no swimming component at this camp.

Sabre Fencing

Age: 9-12 yrs & 12-15 yrs (limited programming offered)

Fencing with the sabre is to join the ranks of Zorro, Captain Jack Sparrow, and the Three Musketeers. The cut and thrust of this former cavalry sword has captured the hearts of many of the Western fencers who are eager to share their love of the sword with campers. Instruction will be provided by the Western varsity fencing team. All fencing equipment will be supplied but campers are encouraged to bring long pants for protection. Please note there is no swimming component at this camp.

Prerequisite: Completion of the introductory fencing camp at Sport Western or at a club such as the local Mustang Sword Club.

Flag Football

Age: senior (8-11 yrs) only 

Campers will be introduced to the game of football in a fun, safe, no contact environment. Instruction will focus on individual skills such as passing, receiving and running. However, campers will also learn the rules of the game and both offensive and defensive strategies.

Football

Age: colts (7-8 yrs), mustangs (9-11 yrs), stallions (12-14 yrs)

Learn from the Western Mustangs! Camp instruction will be provided by both student-athletes and the Western Mustangs varsity coaches, Greg Marshall, Chris Marcus and Tom Flaxman. Camps will take place at TD Stadium and will focus on skill development in a fun and enjoyable atmosphere. Campers will learn the foundations of football and will be exposed to video analysis and speed training sessions. Campers will be placed in groups according to age and skill level. The final day of camp will culminate with a full scrimmage where friends and family are welcome to attend. Campers will receive a limited edition Mustangs practice jersey.

Prerequisite: All participants must bring their own equipment. Football equipment rentals can be secured prior to camp via the London Minor Football Association (LMFA). The rental fee is $45.00 and equipment pick-up on Auguest 3rd, 4th, 5th from 6pm-8pm, at 100 Bessemer Road, Unit 1.

Hip Hop

Age: senior (8-11 yrs) only 

Jam through this week full of tight grooves and cool moves. Learn the basics of hip hop and funk dance while performing to today's hottest music. All ranges of experience are welcome. Participants will work towards an informal progressive routine that will be performed on Friday. Friends and family are welcome and encouraged to attend!

  • 10-15 hours of quality on ice instruction (2-3hrs daily depending on age group)
  • 6:1 camper to instructor teaching ratio
  • Daily power skating instruction to improve speed, agility, balance and stride
  • Daily instruction on passing, puck control and shooting
  • Personalized written evaluation for each player identifying areas for continued improvement

This camp is designed as an early-season primer for competitive players looking to kick start their season. The focus will be on fundamentals including power-skating, stick-handling, passing, puck protection, and shooting. The session will be designed by Western coaches and delivered by members of the women's varsity hockey team.

Highlights include:
  • 15 hours of quality on ice instruction (3 hrs daily)
  • Phased drills and instruction to develop skating, shooting, stick-handling skills
  • Game-like drills to increase hockey sense
  • Instruction on tactical skills (e.g., 2 on 1's) for forwards and defense
  • Instruction on one-on-one techniques (puck protection, angling)
  • Personalized written evaluation for each player identifying areas for continued improvement
  • Off ice sessions including video and other fun activities
  • Campers will receive a jersey and t-shirt

This camp will focus on the fundamentals. The camp is designed for younger goalies (up to age 13) learning to play the position.

Offered for one week only, August 15-19, speciality camps are aimed to develop individual skills in specific areas.
This camp is designed to improve players' power skating, stick handling, passing, and shooting.The camp has been designed by the Western coaching staff and will be delivered by varsity-level hockey players.

Highlights include:
  • 10-15 hours of quality on ice instruction (2-3hrs daily)
  • 6:1 camper to instructor teaching ratio
  • Daily power skating instruction to develop an efficient stride that can be used to generate speed and power
  • Daily instruction on passing, puck control and shooting

This program is designed for the camper who just wants to have fun! Our high-spirited instructors work hard to prepare fun games and activities that will keep campers physically and mentally engaged. Specific sports will not be the focus of this program, but youth-oriented themes and activities such as treasure hunts, obstacle courses, and interactive games will be offered.

Leaders In Training

Age: 12-15 yrs 
This program is designed to introduce participants to group development facilitation and adventure-based learning. Participants will learn the basic concepts and techniques of effective group facilitation and will in turn become effective camp counselors. Through the exploration of popular adventure initiative activities, campers will be familiarized with goal setting and approaches to group facilitation. Campers will receive constant feedback and will hone their leadership skills through active participation.

Mini University

Age: 11-14 yrs 

Mini University is a combined academic and physical activity camp. Subjects taught at the camp include: science, art, and kinesiology whereas there are a wide variety of activities. It is fun-filled, educational program that offers students practical experiences in career-oriented subjects. Our knowledgeable instructors draw upon their own educational experiences to design activities and projects that are both informative and fun! Time is spent both in the lab/studio and on the playing fields/courts.

Multi-Sport

This camp is a recreation-based camp designed for the all-round camper with an emphasis placed on skill development. A variety of sports will be played throughout the week and may include but are not limited to: basketball, beach-ball, volleyball, track and field, flag football, floor hockey, dodgeball, European handball, soccer and capture the flag. It is a week full of high-energy activity with no day alike.

Racquet Sports

Age: 12-15 yrs 

This unique camp provides an introduction to several racquet sports including: tennis, badminton, and squash. Each day participants will spend time on the courts (both indoor and outdoor) learning from our experienced staff, enhancing their technical knowledge and developing their skills. All racquets can be provided but campers are encouraged to bring their own.

Mini Flag Rugby

Age: senior (8-11 yrs) only 

A non-contact version of the newest addition to the Olympic family! Rugby will debut in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Rugby is a fun and exciting game, and a great way to improve gross motor skills such as running, ball handling, kicking, and spatial awareness - all of which provide an excellent athletic skill base for any sport. Campers will learn from the Western Mustangs varsity rugby athletes and coaches. In a safe, non-contact environment, campers will learn to develop basic passing, running and kicking skills, as well as general rugby awareness.

Science

Are you always asking why? If so science camp is the perfect fit for you. It is a place where science and technology are explored through fun, hands-on activities. Children will discover how exciting science can be through age-appropriate experiments, with a focus on different science themes each day. Campers will also be able to take home certain projects at the end of each day.

High Performance Soccer

Age: 8-15yrs 

This camp is suitable for those players with a soccer base who are looking to improve upon their fundamental technical and tactical skills. Instruction will be provided by Western Mustangs varsity athletes and coaches who will bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience. Sessions will include many small sided games and activities that are designed to increase game awareness and technical ability in a fun yet challenging environment. Campers will leave with an increased knowledge of the game and new individual skills.

Soccer

Campers will learn from the best with instruction from the Western Mustangs men's and women's soccer team. There will be a strong focus on fundamental development and fun. Campers will learn the basics, to dribbling, passing, shooting, and defense. The camp will culminate with "game day" on Friday. Campers will be grouped according to age and/or ability whenever possible.

Softball

Age: 8-15yrs 

For boys and girls, this camp offers beginner to intermediate instruction in all the basic softball skills including: throwing, catching, fielding, hitting, and sliding. Participants are grouped according to age, as well as prior experience, and the instruction focuses on learning fundamental skills and proper mechanics through drills and game play. Instruction will be provided by Western Mustangs varsity softball athletes and coaches.

Space Camp

Age: senior (8-11 yrs) only 

Welcome to the wonderful world of space exploration! This camp is provided in collaboration with the Centre for Planetary Science & Exploration. Potential activities may include a tour of Western's Hume Cronyn Observatory, and daily projects and demonstrations with a focus on biology, geology, geography, and astronomy. Campers will also have the opportunity to use tools that real planetary scientists use!

Strength & Conditioning (Co-Ed)

Age: 14-17 yrs 

Ready to take your training to the next level? If you answered yes than join us for the inaugural year of strength and conditioning camp. This fast paced high intensity camp will teach participants the fundamentals of weight-training and so much more. Participants will work different energy systems, be exposed to speed and agility work and learn how to eat like an athlete. Participants will accumulate points throughout the week and will finish the week with a friendly competition. Instruction will be provided by the Western Mustangs strength and conditioning coach and Sport and Recreation Services weight-room and fitness student staff.

Tennis

This camp will expose campers to the fundamentals of tennis however both beginners and intermediates are welcome. Campers will learn all tennis strokes including, forehand, backhand, and volley. Campers will leave with an increased understanding of the game including the rules, scoring, strategies, and tactics. Campers are encouraged to supply their own racquet for comfort, but racquets and balls will be provided.

This camp will teach children the foundations of movement. With reference to the Canadian Long Term Athlete Development document campers will learn how to run, jump and throw. A strong emphasis will be placed on developing physical literacy skills. Instruction will be provided by the Western Mustangs track and field varsity athletes and coaches. The camp is sure to be exciting and fun!

Stangs Volleyball

Age: 11-13 yrs

This camp is suitable for those players with a basic volleyball background who are looking to improve their fundamental volleyball skills. Instruction will be provided by Western Mustangs varsity athletes and coaches who will bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience. Participants will take part in a variety of volleyball activities, including 3-on-3 volleyball and several variations of 6-on-6 play. Participants will leave with an understanding of basic volleyball skills, several forms of modified volleyball games (2 on 2, 3 on 3, 6 on 6), basic offensive and defensive systems, as well as experience in practicing the movement patterns, agility, coordination, speed, and flexibility necessary for success in volleyball.

Stallions Volleyball

Age: 13-15 yrs

This camp is suitable for those players with a volleyball base who are looking to improve upon their fundamental technical and tactical skills. The camp will focus on reinforcing technical execution of basic skills and introducing advanced skills and volleyball team tactics. Participants will be introduced to a variety of defensive and offensive systems of play. This camp will use variations of play to help athletes gain the skill and understanding to make their club or school experience enjoyable. Instructors will introduce: full days of volleyball instruction; supplemented by other sports and modified games, high repetition drills, several forms of modified volleyball games (2 on 2, 3 on 3, 6 on 6), basic and advanced offensive and defensive systems, and technical components of the game that allow athletes to be successful in competition. Instruction will be provided by Western Mustangs varsity athletes and coaches who will bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience.

High Performance Volleyball

Age: 15-18 yrs

Western Mustangs volleyball head coaches will instruct this program with assistance from both men's and women's varsity athletes. The camp will focus on advanced skills and training techniques, introducing higher level team tactics, and applying advanced defensive and offensive systems of play. Athletes will take part in a variety of activities outside of on court training - including physical testing, volleyball specific strength and conditioning activities as well as a selection of sport specific seminars - nutrition for training & competition, mental training for volleyball athletes etc. This camp is intended for athletes who have aspirations of continuing their volleyball career at the post-secondary level. Athletes will be asked to perform advanced skills under a variety of training scenarios, and will take part in many drills that simulate the high intensity and competition level necessary to perform successfully at the elite levels of competition. Several forms of modified volleyball games will be used to help athletes understand game concepts and tactics (2 on 2, 3 on 3, 6 on 6).
