Film 3368F/G - Film Production

Film as Modern Literacy

Traditionally, literacy is defined as the ability to read and write - but at its core - literacy is communication. Film 3368F/G - Film Production (a project-based course offered through the Department of English and Writing Studies) gives students the tools to communicate using images, sound, movement and colour. In an age of digital storytelling, film has become an essential modern literacy — a language that transcends platforms and borders, connecting storytellers with audiences around the world.

Hands-On Learning

Film 3368F/G - Film Production is practical and immersive. More class time is spent on production than lecture. With cameras, lighting and audio equipment in hand, students learn by doing - developing their craft through collaboration and creativity.

Class Film Festival

The term culminates in the Class Film Festival, where students form production companies fulfilling the roles of writers, directors, directors of photography, actors and directors of marketing. The festival draws more than a hundred attendees each year, with distinguished judges - including professors and working filmmakers - selecting the top three films. The audience votes for the winner of the coveted Film Aesthetic RGB Trophy.

Beyond the Classroom

Guest speakers from the film industry along with alumni, share their experiences and advice as students consider their next steps. Graduates of Film 3368F/G - Film Production have gone on to work with YouTube channels, join professional guilds such as IATSE and ACTRA, study at institutions such as City University New York, Brown, Toronto Metropolitan University, and Vancouver Film School - and produce their own independent films.

This is really a hands–on type of course. Compared to other film courses that I['ve] taken this term, this one is where I have the most creative freedom, and experience the least amount of stress... what I learned from this course is going beyond filmmaking, it's also about collaboration!
