Transcendent Memory: State Violence, Solidarity, and Community-Based Research in Postwar El Salvador

The main exhibit will remain open on the first floor of Weldon Library until December 22, 2026. Accessible during the open hours of the library.

The exhibition is curated by Dr. María Laura Flores Barba with assistance from Amanda Grzyb and Reynaldo Hernández. It includes a range of artistic, architectural, and documentary pieces that reflect the diverse work of the Surviving Memory in Postwar El Salvador collaborative research team (www.elsalvadormemory.org).

Highlights include:

  • a large canvas mock-up of the Sumpul River Massacre mural co-created by the Salvadoran youth artist cooperative, Equipo Matiz, and survivors of the massacre
  • a map of massacres in Chalatenango documented by the Western University massacre mapping team
  • a digital photo exhibition by Toronto-based photographer and videographer, Shawn Robertson, who has documented the work of the Surviving Memory team since 2018
  • an exhibition about the architectural design and installation of the Sumpul River Massacre Memorial by the Belgian-Salvadoran architecture team from KU Leuven and AgwA Architects (Brussels)
  • an exhibition about the co-creation of a comic about the history of Las Vueltas by Dr. Beatriz Juárez (Carleton University), Jessica Larios (Western University), and the Las Vueltas community
  • an exhibition of lino cut prints by art students at the University of El Salvador
  • a ceramic Maya alter by Salvadoran ceramist, Evelia Macal
  • weaving and embroidery art
  • a showcase of Surviving Memory’s five community books
