The Ross and Marion Woodman Speaker Series in Romanticism
Dr. Marjorie Levinson presents "The Bounding Line"
November 5 at 4:30 PM in University College 3105
Reflecting on 50 years of an illustrious career, Marjorie Levinson uses William Blake’s signature phrase, “the bounding line,” to explore her critical practice as a model of knowing rooted in the exercise of self-surpassing desire. Three emblems for Blake’s phrase – his engraving for “The Tyger” from Songs of Experience, Caspar David Friedrich’s Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog, and a recent photograph of the Atacama Desert – argue for the hubris and heroism of epistemologies of difference and desire. Through these images, Levinson explores her history of reading forward to her most recent work in order to offer a different model of knowing at a time when “doing literary criticism” seems more vexed, elusive, and vulnerable than ever.
