PhysPharm Seminar Series | Michael Pyne

Michael Pyne, PhD, from the Biology Department will present: "From flavours to pharma: Engineering brewer’s yeast to produce high-value pharmaceuticals."

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explain the advantages of microbial biomanufacturing over traditional plant extraction and chemical synthesis for producing complex pharmaceuticals.
  2. Describe how brewer’s yeast can be engineered to produce plant-derived pharmaceuticals such as opioids.
  3. Explain the concept of retrobiosynthesis and how it can be used to design biosynthetic routes to natural and new-to-nature molecules.
