Critical Reflexivity: Positionality, Power, and Knowledge Justice

Researchers are not neutral observers: our identities, assumptions, relationships, and disciplinary contexts shape the knowledge we produce. Grounded in a knowledge justice approach, this interactive workshop explores critical reflexivity as a responsibility of researchers, examining how our research practices can both reproduce and challenge epistemic injustice.

Through individual and group activities, participants will examine positionality and power in relation to their own research and social location, with the goal of developing more relational and accountable approaches to knowledge production.

Learning outcomes:

  • Discuss how social identities, communities, lived experiences, academic disciplines, and epistemic injustices shape how they understand themselves and are understood by others;
  • Reflect on how power operates throughout the research process, including whose knowledge is recognized, interpreted, represented, or excluded; and
  • Consider how, where, and when to disseminate their ideas, including questions around how their work may be accessed, used, repurposed, or misused by others.
