Rapport to Relationality
Considering how to incorporate an ethics of care into our teaching practices is especially important at a moment when many educators and learners are navigating individual and societal stressors. This workshop will explore two connected concepts – rapport and relationality – and how they can shape classroom dynamics, sense of belonging, and learning. Through reflection, practice, and conversation, participants will explore ways to nurture rapport and relationality to shape engaging, trusting, and accessible classrooms
By the end of this session, faculty will have the opportunity to
- Identify practical ways to build rapport at the beginning of the course
- Describe how relationality moves beyond rapport into sustained relationship building
- Practice a relational activity and reflect on the possible benefits and challenges of similar activities
This session is open to any faculty, librarians, archivists, postdoctoral scholars, and staff at Western involved or interested in exploring teaching and learning.
