Over Mahler's Shoulder: The Making of Symphony No. 1

Western holds the earliest known manuscript of Gustav Mahler's First Symphony. It's a copyist's score, but Mahler worked on it directly: crossing things out, adding instruments and rewriting passages in his own hand. You can see how one of his masterpieces evolved before being ready to be performed.

To mark London Symphonia's Oct. 17 performance of the symphony, the Music Library and London Symphonia are opening the Gustav Mahler-Alfred Rosé Collection for an afternoon.

Brian McMillan, director of the Music Library, will talk about the manuscript and the story of the collection, the largest of its kind in North America. Then he'll lead a tour of selected items. Video of London Symphonia's performance plays before and after the talk.
