Connecting with Your Inner Upstander During Medical Education and Research

This interactive workshop introduces medical educators to forms of bias that can influence career choices, empathy for others experiencing bias, a moral duty to respond to unfair acts, and learning the best approaches for intervention. The session will also explore links between biased behaviors and patient outcomes.
Participants will engage in guided individual reflection and facilitated collective dialogue to examine their own experiences and responses when encountering bias, as well as lessons learned from these incidents. The session also includes a discussion on how a culture of bias might influence clinical care. The workshop concludes with a practical discussion to extend participants' reflections into strategies for addressing bias when encountered in their clinical practice.
This workshop is part of the Schulich CPD-EDID Workshop Series. Schulich faculty are priority registrants but it is open to all Western faculty, all health professions educators and all learners in the health professions.
