Future Prof Workshop: Communication Essentials for the Intercultural Canadian Classroom
Session Description
This session explores communication fundamentals for Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs), with a particular focus on the experiences of International GTAs and others who are new to the Canadian higher education context. Participants will examine common modes of communication used in the TA role, including presenting information, leading discussions, email communication considerations, office hours, and providing feedback. The session will explore strategies for setting clear expectations and communicating effectively with students and instructors while maintaining professional boundaries and navigating common classroom situations. Drawing on their existing academic, professional, linguistic, and cultural experiences, learners will review key aspects of Canadian classroom culture, including participation, student-GTA interactions, and inclusive communication practices. By the end of the session, participants will have practical tips and strategies to communicate confidently, support student learning, and navigate their teaching responsibilities effectively.
